Using VGA output and video out on iBook.

So this weekend me and my friend were out at a camp and we wanted to use both VGA out and video(mixed with stereo audio)out. we wanted to hook the vga connector into our projector. all we had was the original apple minijack video/stereo connector with the iBook to get audio from it to our mixer and system. but when then were both connected, the mirror monitor on the projector did appear, there was no signal, from either the VGA connection or rca video connector. but when on or the other was unplugged, we would get the picture on the projector no problem. the iBook is one of the old G3 icebooks, its 400mhz i think. we were using keynote if you need to know for the most part. is there anyway to get around thise so we can use both?

I don't have my G3 iBook anymore but as far as I recall, there was only one video out port on mine. I could use either a monitor or tv but not both at the same time. I had both video adapters but having only one video port, couldn't plug both in at the same time. I don't think the video card in the iBooks will support more than dual display mirroring unless you specifically hack it to do so.

good luck

A bit sarcastic, but yeah, I didn't quite understand the original post either.

I'm guessing you can't use them both at once--it'd be asking it to do 2 external mirrors, and the original icebooks (they were 500 MHz) wouldn't be able to handle that, especially with only had 8 MB of VRAM... come to think of it though, I don't know if even the new powerbooks can do that (like a DVI out and an S-Video out at the same time).

Were you trying to get 2 video signals out, or just video from one and audio from the other?

If you wanted to use the VGA out, you could probably still use the A/V out for audio as long as it wasn't a cable that also carried a video signal (look at the jack, and if it has 2 rings, it's cool, if it has 3, it's for video too).

Was this not working either?

If that's the cable you were using, the iBook was probably sending the video signal down it too (not noticing if there was any device at the other end to receive it), thereby cancelling out the VGA output.

So if you get a mini-jack to Stereo RCA adapter, you should be able to get audio and VGA output at the same time. If you wanted to test it before buying another adapter (it's only a few bucks though), you could use the VGA out and try headphones at the same time.
