Did anyone notice the slide during the announcement today at the WWDC of iPhone 3.0 software which showed which carriers would allow tethering as of launch date? Here is the picture:

As you can see, Rogers is listed. Any idea if Rogers will charge for this? How would they know if you were tethering anyway? This makes good reason to get the 6GB $30/mo plan that is now back on offer for a while.

Just posted about my Rogers Tethering Experience: http://www.ehmac.ca/ipod-itunes-iphone-apple-tv/77066-rogers-tethering.html

I have tethering enabled on my account right now.

How would they know? When you go into the Network setting on your iPhone, it should be a switch on/off, but if it's not activated on your account, it is a Set Up button. Rogers has to activate the tethering.

Mind you I'm sure there are ways around that once the iPhone will be jailbroken.

What I really find funny is that AT&T will NOT have MMS and Tethering available at launch of the new iPhone or OS 3.0. I can just imagine how many users are upset in the U.S.
Usually it's us Canadians who get things late - sure we'll pay more because of Rogers, but at least we get the features this time at launch.

Yeah, if you watch the keynote video -- AT&T was getting pretty strongly razzed by the crowd when it became apparent that they weren't up the challenge when even MUCH smaller carriers in other countries were -- not just on the MMS, but there was some other feature that AT&T was noticeably absent on and the crowd reacted strongly. Would not have wanted to be the nearest AT&T shop to the Moscone Centre today. :)

I doubt they can charge for tethering if it's bundled into the OS.

I have a 3G on Rogers 6G plan and I purchased a usb stick from Future crap and I just swap the sim between the 2 devices on the same plan. All the data usage goes to my mobile account and I use just over 5G per month.

I'm running beta 3.0 OS and will call Rogers later today to have tethering switched on.
Maybe it's a feature that they control so if you want the option they'll enable it but they'll charge you another $5 per month.

Here is a little tethering info from the Rogers website.

Tethering is the use of your phone as a wireless modem to connect to the Internet from your computer. For a limited time, if you subscribe to a data option which includes at least 1GB of data transmission between June 8, 2009 and December 31, 2009, you may use tethering as part of the volume of data included in your option at no additional charge. Tethering cannot be used with data options of less than 1GB.

Thanks

Well, KMphotos, that's pretty much the definitive answer. Thanks very much for that link. Now I'm wondering: do we take this to the CRTC **now** as a potential contravention of the spirit of Net Neutrality, or do we wait? I am for starting some kind of formal action, possibly through Michael Geist's excellent blog Michael Geist - Blog to stop this obvious contravention of the spirit of the Internet BEFORE Rogers gets going on this in 2010.
