For whatever reason, it doesn't like your project or choice of media, you have sleep enabled, or there is an issue with your drive or it's support. Since you didn't give us any info on your system model, installed RAM amount, OS version, iDVD version, or burner model, you get to look for the fix yourself:

I would check xlr8yourMac's site to flush out the usual drive model issues, and also check here for the usual "Stage 4" iDVD issues and the usual fixes.

Also, you will usually get more help if you post in "Mac Help and Troubleshooting", since most of the people who do offer help look there first. Don't bother re-posting there now, just keep it in mind for the next time you have a similar question.

If the project is very large it will take a long time to burn. When it first came out I burned a project that almost filled the disk and I basically had to leave it over night. Turn off auto sleep and let it go. You may get a spinning ball for long periods of time if you don't have a lot of memory. Try setting it up to run just as you go to bed and see what happens.

 

This is a common problem with iDVD 4. Check apples support page and you will see. The same thing happens to me no matter what media I use. Normally its Verbatim or Fuji. The only solution that I found worked for me was the iDVD hack. This allows you to save your iDVD file as a disk image and then burn it with toast. It works very well. The only other things I have heard to try is in iDVD preference, change the setting to Best Quality. This will not allow you to encode in the background, but for some people it has worked.

I tried the hack... and I couldn't get it to work.

It was the one that you copy 2 files to your home folder, and then hold option when you select burn disc from the menu. A window was supposed to pop up but never did. How long does it take for the window to appear.

Can someone send me a link to a current hack?

 

I think you have to hold the control button when you do it. I am not at my mac right now so I cant verify, but I am pretty sure you have to hold the control key while you press burn.
