I have a new I-Book and would like to transfer over EVRYTHING from my old one to my new one. Email, programs, settings, etc, without having to start from scratch. Is there an easy way to do this?

FROM Ibook 900 to Ibook 1.33.

THANKS!!

hey mcfadden 99,

the easiest way to transfer files is to use FireWire target disk mode, detailed instructions are listed below. If you want to create a bootable clone (which is what I think you want), download and install Carbon Copy Cloner (freeware) or SuperDuper (shareware) on your Ibook 900. You can find both (and more) at versiontracker.com.

Instructions for FireWire Target Disc Mode:
Make sure that the target computer is turned off (in your case your new Ibook).
Make sure to also plug in the AC power adapters for both Ibooks.
Use a FireWire cable (6-pin to 6-pin) to connect your Ibook (900Mhz) to your new Ibook.
Start up the new Ibook computer and immediately press and hold down the T key until the FireWire icon appears. The hard disk icon of your new Ibook will appear on your Ibook (900Mhz) desktop.
Lauch the application you want to begin the cloning process, such as Carbon Copy Cloner. If all you wish to do is transfer files, just drag & drop them.
When you are finished, drag the target computer's hard disk icon to the trash. Press the target computer's power button to turn it off and unplug the FireWire cable.

Hope this helps…

When I booted my iBook.. with a fresh install.. it asked me if I had an older Mac that I would like to copy. I think this is what you are looking for. If you have the original install disks for the new iBook. Just fresh install OS X.. when you're setting it up.. it will ask you to do Firewire Target Disk mode to do the transfer.

Hope this helps :)

Vexel's suggestion...

Here's how...
http://www.apple.com/macosx/upgrade/upgradetonewmac.html

Update: Seems that not all computers have a "Set Up Assistant" in their Applications/Utilities folder. I guess this feature is only available on new(er) computers and Tiger only. I'm using a TiBook and no Set Up Assistant in my Utilities folder.

Transferring files from your old Mac to your new one (taken from Mac Help)

The first time you turned on your new Mac, the Setup Assistant started up and may have asked if you wanted to transfer information from your existing Mac to your new one.

If you did not transfer your settings and files from your old Mac to your new one when you first set up your new Mac, you can use the Setup Assistant to transfer your information.

Locate the Setup Assistant in Applications/Utilities. Open it and follow the onscreen instructions.

You can transfer all of the information from your old Mac to your new one, including network and account settings, files, and even applications. The Setup Assistant will walk you through connecting your Macs using a FireWire cable.

If you don't see the Setup Assistant in the Utilities folder, your computer might not support this.

Carbon Copy Cloner - Flawless

Thanks for the replies!

Which method is better/ easier? Will they both achieve the same result?

Thanks!
I did a CCC to my firewire external and my archive drive external just to make sure if anything went wrong with either drive. Erased my PB hard drive and restored the CCC'd version back to my PB. The only thing I noticed that was different was that my
system now runs much faster. I think I'll be using CCC every 3 months or so just to "defrag" everything.

I vote Carbon Copy Cloner
