HI there:

would like to refresh my memory on how to burn a bootable cd for my powerbook 867. i am running 9.2.2 and have been having difficulties booting from attempted burned cd's. i get a "bomb" message during startup - it happens just before the extensions are supposed to start loading. i tried again turning extensions off but suffered the same result. i am trying to make a bootable cd with diskwarrior installed in it so that i can optimize my HD and run diskwarrioe properly. thanks to all who can comment.

I don't think you can on the 867 PB - we have not yet seen a Bootable CD for the new models - we use a Firewire drive or another partition for that purpose.
If you have an earlier 9.2 CD you could try a writeable disc image then add just the correct ROM file from the 9.2 on your powerbook - might take some fiddling.
Keep us posted.

Are you using Toast Titanium to burn your disk?
The latest version I have (5.2.1) does a great job making boot CD's on my older machines. Create a new data disk and give it a name. Then you drag in your blessed system folder and your diskwarrior folder. When you start the burn it will create a bootable CD without any fuss.

I can't speak for these new-fangled machines, but maybe some of these old tricks are worth a try.

1) Go to Extensions Manager and create a new extension set with only the bare minimum required to make the machine run (toast extensions, video drivers, etc.). Give this new set a name like Bootable CD set. Restart your machine with this new set. Now create a boot disk using Toast. The trimmed down extension set will often allow you to boot when your normal extension set will crap out when using a CD. The nice thing about this method is that all your preferences are still there. This is the only way I can get my monitor resolution to be retained. Otherwise, it will revert to 640x480 and screw up my desktop.

2) Use the Startup Disk control panel to select the Boot CD as your startup drive. Restart without shutting down. This is often more successful than a cold boot.

You have to use Toast to burn a Boot CD now. A boot CD has to be HFS format, and Disc Burner only does HFS+

Toast Titanium 5 makes an HFS disk jim dandy though.

At least, that was teh way it was last time I made a 9.x Boot CD.
