Some educators have claimed that eliminating summer vacation benefits students since it reduces "summer learning setback," that phenomenon in which many students forget over the summer what they learned the school year before.

But sociologist Paul von Hippel of Ohio State University found that over a full year, math and reading test scores improved about the same rate for children in year-round schools as they did for students whose schools followed a traditional nine-month calendar.
