X11 on OS X 10.4+ for Gimp

Hi,

Not sure if anyone's familiar with Gimp software...it's a free photoshop like program that is opensourced (read about it in PC magazine). Well, I went out of my way to download it & was hoping to get it up & running but, it required a plug in called X11...

Now, I was attempting to install X11 here: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/x11formacosx.html but, of course after getting to the Select destination it messages:

"You cannot install X11 on this volume. Newer software already exists on your hardware"

Obviously, this is a conspiracy by Apple to limit or restrict Apple users out of using an "open source" software source. Not all of us have hundreds of dollars for photoshop & the like. Geez!

Got any advice or remedies I would much appreciate it!

Best Regards,

x11 should already be on your system. that's what the error message is trying to tell you.

i've tried gimp on my ibook so it's not a conspiracy by anybody. i also use lots of other open source/freeware/shareware software, most notably blender, wings3d, adium, cyberduck etc etc

you should be aware, though, that tablet events are not accessible to apple x11 based apps, so your tablet if you have one won't work. actually it will, but it won't have any pressure sensitivity. this is what made me dump gimp after about 5 seconds. hopefully apple will fix this.

there is an app called seashore (based on gimp) with a native aqua interface. read about it here: http://orange.blender.org/blog/seashore it's still in the early stages of develpment and rather crude at the moment though it will restore pressure sensitivity.

Thanks TroutMaskReplica,

I'm obviously encouraged that you've already worked with Gimp but, loading it says I need X11 or something???? & when I download X11 ..... I'm obviously not able to make it work.

It's funner & more believable that it's a conspiracy when things go wrong...??

Please, help me out if anyone else has advice/solution?

Thanks,

I don't know if that qualifies as a bug, but it's pretty darn annoying. Happened to me too - until someone in here clued me into the fact that you DO need to install X11, but NOT the one that's on Apple's website. You have to go back to the Install DVD that came with your computer, and do a Custom Install, and choose JUST the X11 package (don't want to wipe anything else out).

I still don't understand why the downloadable version won't install.. anybody with more *nix experience than me able to explain it?

Look for X11SDK.pkg in Spotlight if you have Tiger or in Finder, it will then install when you double click on it. I went through the exact same thing you described, then found X11SDK.pkg and now thing work like a charm. Even though X11 hasn't officially been installed, for some reason when trying to install the download version it finds the .pkg and stops the install.

I also use Gimp and have Corel Paint IX and find that I use Gimp more often for editing.

Insert your OS install disc and double-click the 'Install Bundled Software Only' icon. Among the other software choices, you should find X11. There's no conspiracy, but X11 isn't installed by default as it's not needed by "typical" users. Once the install finishes you should be able to run Gimp.

I'm in Panther, but I imagine it's the same. X11 is located at /Applications/Utilities/X11 if you want to check to see if it's already there.
Apple is in fact a pretty decent open source contributor - there's no conspiracy - just looks like a bug in your system or process.
By the way I second the recommendation for Fink. That's how I got GnuCash and The Gimp up and running.

I have X and gimp on my ibook, being a former unix/linux user (UW grad), gimp was a must have for me to make funny pictures of my cow-orkers.

OS install Disc meaning Tiger install 1 disk? Or the Jaguar disk that came with my computer? Or...Xcode 2

Sorry, I'm so lost here.

Thanks-you.

It's on the Tiger disc 1, but it'll also be on the Jaguar disc. Use the CD for the OS version you're actually running now, to make sure the files are compatible.

When doing a fresh install of the OS, you can install X11 at the same time by clicking the Customize button during the setup process; it isn't installed by default, but it's a simple matter of checking its box.

Hope this helps clear the fog.

Hi,

Not sure it's 'cause I wasn't doing a "fresh" install. By this I mean I did do an OS X install but, without wiping out or destroying my data this time. I did not see a "customize" button in this process. I've tried many of the links that were suggested & didn't get the desire effect either. X11 isn't on Apples own website anymore, arghhh....!!!!?!

I believe I even need X11 to get Openoffice as well. Okay, I had a beer tonight but, I think either my skills of observation are powerless or my computer literacy is substandard these days since I haven't gotten this simply download from the suggestions or advice given thus far.

Many thanks.

Hi,

Same thing....X11 could not be installed because"a newer version exists"...What the fragen@#$#%#%@#$!!!! Ya, so I've tried multiply ways here...why not an available download....I know I'm not the only one with this issue!

Thanks for trying!

X11 will install fine from your Tiger disk. It's under the extras or software bundle. There is no need to reinstall Tiger. I've done it and installed Gimp as well with no issues. So, plop the Tiger disc in and look for it. The download version is for installs on previous versions of OS X. Therefore it will not install on Tiger. Hence, you need the X11 from your Tiger install disc.

Well to all you "it's just that simple and you're all dummies" dudes, it's not that simple and it's not working!!

My PowerBook came with Panther and I bought a standalone version of Tiger - there was only one DVD in the box - no such thing as Disk 1.

On the DVD is the Tiger install icon - which demands a restart as soon as you click on it. There are two readme files and another folder of extra stuff - xCode items - whatever the heck that is to a lay person.

No mention of x11.

No installer for this xCode stuff, so I went though the double-clicking on the .pkg file and it seemed to install. The developers folder appeared on my hard drive. Inkscape still keeps complaining that x11 won't start.

I then did a search for x11SDK (as suggested here) and double-clicked on it - it did it's thing and told me that there was an error and it couldn't install.

I then went back to the DVD and double-clicked the x11SDK from there and got a successful install (HAH!) but Inkscape still complains that x11 won't start.

Apple has done something stupid with Tiger and these developer tools IMHO. I've installed them with previous versions of OSX and it WAS just that easy. This time around, I don't know what's happening, but I can't get it to work.

Although the last install said it was successful, there is no x11 app on my computer and if I remember correctly, there should be.

I don't even remember why I wanted to do this, it's become such a frustration :D :D

Hi, look in utilities for the X11 install.
On the Tiger Disc, there is an icon for optional installs. On my PB I have to scroll down to see it. double click optional installs. Select from the drop down for applications. In the drop down is X11. Check that and continue the install. It installed under utilities on my machine.
