Hand it to the Cons to turn Canada Day into a divisive, partisan hackery day.

“By contributing to the security of Afghanistan and Haiti, and by becoming an energy and resources superpower, he said Canada has resumed its role as a world leader.”
Stephan Harper

Let’s have a closer look at what he’d like to take credit for.
Haiti: Canadian troops to extend mission in Haiti: Martin
DND/CF : News Release : CF Extends Contribution to UN Mission in Haiti
That was Paul Martin, a liberal

Afghanistan: CBC News In Depth: Afghanistan
That would be Chretien and Martin

“From the natural wealth of the land that God created to the talents, energy and imagination of people drawn from all nations of the Earth,” he said, “we are a country that has been truly blessed.”
Now what does God have to do with natural resources?

And we are “back” from what? Maybe Harper means turning our backs on Kyoto.

We should also thank Harper for injecting the Connie Blue into this – hey maybe he really wants us to be Americans with the red, white and blue!

In a nutshell, the Neo-Cons think that Jesus is coming soon, so it doesn't matter what we do to the Earth in the meantime.

That has been ridiculous since it was first mentioned by government. I think they picked it up from an editorial or something, where a nice turn of phrase is not political nonsense, and decided that nonsense sounds good enough. Now it's mentioned in a serious-sounding wiki entry. XX)

since the neo cons believe in the coming rapture in which all Jews will either die or convert to Christianity, I wonder how that plays in the Jewish community which is being wooed by the cons, vis a vis, their current middle east stance, and by the many prominent jewish community leaders are vocal in their support for Canada's new gov't

You know, could you guys knock it off for one day?

The question was: What does God have to do with nature? The answer: everything. He created it.

At least that's what my faith tells me and others as well, not just Christians. Now, if you don't particularly believe, fine, it's a free country. But stop insulting those who do.

Also, not all Christians believe nature is there for humanity to abuse. There is a strong stewardship role for humanity, one which is open to vigorous debate about how well we've done.

But stop insulting people of many different faith backgrounds and stop lumping them in as all being war-hungry neo-cons. Perhaps one should start lumping in all Liberals as abortion-loving, family destroying, communists?

Rather than go there however, why don't we try to be all good Canadians and be more civilized and polite?

Church and state should be seperate. I don't care if you or anyone believes in whatever but there should not be a combination of the two. I noticed that Harper had mentioned "god" in his speech and I turned to my girlfriend and told her that he has to mention "god" at least once to satisfy his electorate.

I think people are overreacting just a bit.

Although I am very athiest, very anti-religious, I have no problems with Harper referring to the 'natural wealth of the land that God created'.

Since our planet, land, natural resources were all formed via billions of years of events of galactic proportions ( the Big Bang, cosmic radiation, accumulation of space dust), it's fair to lump all those things into 'God'. The believers get there's and the non-believers know the scientific truths.

Yawn...

it's also equally insulting to have your country's leader push beliefs you don't have. Believe what you want, but don't expect me to. If he is going to do that, then it's little wonder people will lump those beliefs with Harper and his gang.

So I'd say he's doing everyone a disservice.
