I've been using a PS4 controller with my Mac for the longest time. People say you can use it wirelessly but I've never been able to get it to work properly. The BEST and most reliable way is with the cord attached.

I bought a steelseries Nimbus which is supposed to work with Apple TV and iOS but when it came to the Mac, it couldn't read the shoulder buttons. So I returned it.

Any suggestions for a great wireless solution here?

maybe

so I'm guessing you did the Discovery mode thing by holding down the Playstation button and share at the same time, and watching for the flashing light at the front of the controller.
Huh. Apparent the SteelSeries Nimbus Should work with iOS devices, Apple TV and Mac. but only with certain games....listed in the Companion App which is only available for iPhone and iPad, but not for Mac OS X. and the Nimbus itself is MFi (made for iPhone/iPad/iPod) and there are almost no MFi compatible games on Mac. Found this:
https://joystickmapper.com/, and there's something called "Controllers" from vivid machine, but it's $20. Needs 10.8 or better. There's also something called "gamepad menu"
which is free, so games that sorta kinda work with the Nimbus, this makes more of them work ? Available here:

mentions you might have to disable gatekeeper to run it....
sorry I couldn't be of more help. There doesn't seem to be a gaming controller out there for Mac only.
