Really stupid question, I know
But I am trying to edit a document in VI and I can type in everything but I xannot delete any of the original text, but I can delete any new text..
Is this a permisions thing?
I tried chmod 777 filename , but its still the same problem.
I am definatley in insert mode in VI.
Suggestions anyone?
thanks

In vi, in order to delete something that has already been inputted (eg. its been in the file since you started this last insert/append session) you have to go to command mode (hit Esc) and press x over each letter, or press d twice to delete the line. Also a number then dd will delete that many lines, and a number then x will delete that many characters. A little different approach then what most are used to, but after a little using you get the hang of it.

Oh yeah, theres a REALLY good help pdf for vi use. http://www.eng.hawaii.edu/Tutor/vi.html
