Hahaha! The monolith of text/spam that was in this thread before it was removed.:)
I don't think there's a way to be the thread to pull your tweets...
For someone who's been in the tech industry for a while, and who's had a twitter account since close to the beginning, I don't quite get the appeal/need for it. I recently started using it, but I'm still not sure what it is for. Especially for those that use Facebook regularly. I now just update my twitter, but it feeds into my facebook status.

Is there some secret that I'm missing here? I keep hearing Twitter referred to as the "Newsgroups of the future". I don't get it.

There have been ~6 spam posts posted to this thread that have been removed - normally any posts that say "Spam reported" and such are removed because the post they refer to is gone but sometimes they get missed.

On one hand the Spam reported lets people know that it's been reported, on the other hand it requires another post to be deleted as a completely separate process from deleting the spam.

I was just ignoring the whole spam sidetrack as I didn't get it. But now it all makes sense. :) Thanks for the enlightenment Chealion.

Now back to Twitter talk...:D What's the purpose of it?

It can be whatever you want it to be... in 140 characters or less. ;)

I follow various blog writers, actors/entertainers, magazines, businesses and comic illustrators. They tend to post stuff that you wouldn't normally see on a site or web forum. In some cases, they offer notices to sales/specials or shows and the like that are specifically for Twitter followers.
You can also respond to people, or re-tweet their post (which is basically taking what they posted and sending it to your "profile"...

I have my twitter updating my blog, and my facebook status... :)

It's amazing how you can syndicate your posts...

There are people out there that use it for business - sending out marketing tips as an example. There are some people like me who have one just for the hell of it. There are some people that have it to help promote themselves - Brittany Spears, Tina Fey. The TTC has one for sending out alerts.

There are all kinds of uses for it...
Okay, I think I kinda get it now. What was confusing me is why people were referring to it as the "Newsgroups of the future." I don't think it is quite that, but I do like what it is/does.

For the most part, it doesn't really have much of a purpose. I think of it as a "wire frame view" of the lives of my friends and people I'm interested in.

The best part about it is *you* choose who you follow - so *you* decide how it works for you.

Who ever described it that way was is *dead* wrong. It's more like really slow iChat/IRC....:)

Only a twit would twitter. ;)

I couldn't agree more - My Twitter is at Twitter / ShawnKing.

Everyone says Twitter is the Next Big Thing. It is - until the next Next Big Thing comes along.

It's actually a fairly benign form of communication that signifies *nothing* no matter how much marketing weenies, celebrities or New/Old Media try to make it so. LIke most fads, this too shall pass.
