I did this foul deed with a Radeon 8500 a year back. I followed the instructions at http://www.coffeehaus.com/radeon8500.html

I did the "risky" version of the flash (blindly flashing it without a PCI video card to monitor what's going on). Worked fine for me, but you never know...

I'd say the biggest challenge would be to actually find a compatible 8500. Only certain types will accept the Mac firmware.

There's a huge thread over at Macnn about flashing the 8500.

You need to be careful about the model you are flashing. E.g. the 32 MB PCI version of the 7000 with DDR RAM works but not the AGP. Some 128 MB 8500s work and some do not.

If you do a search on flashing Radeon in a google search you'll find a few interesting sites

Stick to original ATI cards and you shouldn't have any problems.

GeForce 2MX 400
Non-Ti GeForce 3
Radeon 7000
Radeon 8500
Trident XP2

The GeForce 4 is flashable, but it requires special PC based BIOS programming software, it is far more trouble than it is worth.

nvidia is cool with flashing, some people claiming to work for ATI have bitched about it on forums, but they don't seem to have an offical position.
