There was a thread here before but perhaps times have achanged. Noticed Macnutt, rest in peace, posted something for driving standard, funny guy. :)

Anyway fess up, do you drive an automatic, clutchless manual mode (aka tiptronic, shiftronic, manumatic, semi manual, whatever you want to call it), or standard? State why.

This in light of my friend's slap in the face "Why do you want to buy a manual? Automatics are easier to drive" comment.

Other than my first car being an automatic and my scooter back in college being automatic, I'm a standard guy all the way. Even had a manual choke on two of my cars both Honda Civic wagons :D. My current ride's a 1991 Toyota Corolla standard, I just bought it back from the guy I sold it to. I just love being in complete control of my car.

I have to admit though the Ford Fusion SEL I rented was a pretty nice toy.

My preference is always standard, but some of my vehicles have been, by necessity, automatic.
Tranny of Choice

Mazda RX7 - 5-Speed Manual Transmission
Honda S2000 - 6-Speed Manual Transmission
Acura TL - 5-speed automatic transmission with Sequential SportShift

There was a time when a manual transmission would deliver superior gas mileage and acceleration when compared to an automatic transmission.

Today's technology has changed all that - but nothing compares to the feel of a manual stick shift in a sports car (... well almost nothing).
A POS transmission that I have had replaced twice.
Automatic.

A car is a device designed for getting me (and whatever I'm carrying around) from Point A to Point B in reasonable comfort and reasonably quickly.

That said, I'd like to learn to drive standard, mostly for the flexibility (i.e., I'm able to drive any car) and because it's cheaper.
For me, automatic.

For Eddie Murphy, I believe she's called Shalimar.
You missed a few options for your poll. My car has a "Continuously Variable Transmission" and does not have gears in the traditional sense.

Other Hybrids and electrics use similar approaches.
In this modern era you have missed my transmission.

Continuously variable automatic transmission with engine braking (PRNDB). From a Toyota Highlander Hybrid.

I will complete poll with Automatic.

:)

good one
I prefer a manual, I learned to drive with a manual (and a Manuel, hehe my dad's name), and I took my 1st driving test with on a manual car. My current truck came with a automatic with one of those trendy manumatic systems but it still doesn't feel as good as a proper manual tranny.

Hyundai Santa Fe : Auto
1972 Austin Mini : Manual
1989 Austin Mini : Manual

Laterz :)

I second that ;) Miata MX-5 owner.

My Dad had a 1959 Morgan. Fun car to drive with the gear shift hanging down from under the dash.
Automatic all the way.

My car as a 4 speed automatic. I regularly disable overdrive to pass people. My car had AutoStick as an option, and I could install it if I wanted too. Its tempting.
The poll is not complete for people such as me.

I own a 1949 Meteor with a three speed standard tranny known as "three-on-the-tree".

I have a 1970 Monte Carlo with an automatic.

I have a 2001 Windstar with an automatic.

I have a 2001 Suzuki 4 x 4 with an automatic selective range.

I have a 2003 Nissan Xttera with a five speed standard.

I have a 2005 Ford V-10 Motor Home with an automatic.

How should I answer the poll?

Manual. Automatic is far too boring to drive.
Manual transmission for me as well.

- Cheaper by $1000+ on a new vehicle (which I have).
- Much more fun to drive + more control of the vehicle.
- Better on fuel milage.
2003 Hyundai Elanta GT 5spd manual transmission.
I drive truck (5 Tonne) 10 gears. So the last thing I want is to drive stick in my car. Had enough fun at work!:ptptptptp
That's why the poll's multiple choice :D For people who have multiple cars like you.

Blah, it's still automatic!! Just instead of automatically shift gears it's automatically adjusting the one variable gear.
