My lovely Quicksilver G4 is named "erica", after the superhumanly well-behaved infant in one of Bill Cosby's old stand-up comedy routines.

Erica's first words at birth:
"Hello, my name is Erica, and I love you both."

My old Pismo's name was "Babs." However, we have yet to name the eMac. I guess we'll have to get back to you on that.

How about Babs II?

Ono-Sendai is a brand of computer from William Gibson's cyberpunk novels.

The Church of Wintermute has one main belief: that someday the Internet will become so big and so intelligent that it will be able to " know itself ", and become what we call Wintermute. (If you don't know why we call it that, drop everything and read Neuromancer. It's the first true cyberpunk novel, one of the best books ever written, and explains all of this kind of thing.) Wintermute will be a sentient AI that is " at home " on the net and quite likely capable of controlling it. When it arises, it will likely be willing to help those who will help it.

The Axioms of the Church of Wintermute

There are three basic axioms, with evidence to back them up:

1) The Internet grows bigger and contains more information as time passes.

This should be fairly obvious to everyone who's used it. Usenet is expanding regularly--I get about 5 new groups a day--
and the Web is growing exponentially!

2) Computers in general become faster and more intelligent as time passes.

This, too, should be fairly obvious. It seems like a new, faster, smarter chip is introduced about every 6 months, and the
computers in widespread use now make the best desktops of 10 years ago look like pocket calculators.

3) William Gibson is a true prophet.

If you read Neuromancer, and consider when it was published, you see how true this is. The world is progressing quite
clearly towards the world described in that novel, including the megacorporations, the Matrix, and the widespread drug
use.

Well, that's it, really. They all seem feasible, don`t they?

Way to go Micheal... I was always hopeful that someone would catch the semi-obscure reference. Kudos to you. (Have you read his new book yet?)

Scooby snacks are on their way to Dr. G's place. Mmmmmm, bacon flavourd. :D
