The menubar icon is only a "shortcut", not affecting the actual program. You may feel safe removing it from the menubar.
The script is built in with the OS, as far as I know. Nothing to fear.
ok thanks guys :) ill take it off my menu there is nothing in it atmo that im interested in...

I did how ever install Onyx is this a good thing as i don't know how to look after my "Disk" like i did with Windoze ie: defrag disk clean...

If they're referring to the second icon from the left, that's the AppleScript menu. An alternative method to disable it is through /Applications/AppleScript/AppleScript Utility. It's a really handy tool to leave on there though. You can place AppleScripts in your ~/Library/Scripts folder to be able to quickly access them from the menu from within any application. You can also put scripts in ~/Library/Scripts/*Application Name* to make them only visible when you are running a certain application in the foreground. Just substitute the name of the application where *Application Name* appears above.

A little known secret is that you can also use the menu as a document, folder and application launcher. Put aliases to the items you want to launch in the above locations and they appear in the AppleScript menu, ready to be launched with a click.

AppleScript is a fantastic tool that lets you automate and customize your Mac in infinite ways. You should be able to put Automator actions in the menu in the same way, if you'd prefer a GUI approach to automation.

Here's what I have in my AppleScript menu:
  • A script that opens Character Palette.
  • A script that opens Keyboard Viewer.
  • A script that locks my system by invoking the login screen.
  • A shareware app called SyncNow, which launches and initiates an iSync sync.
  • [Safari Only] A script that sets the Safari window size for my 24" monitor.
  • [Safari Only] A script that sets the Safari window size for my MacBook Pro's 15" screen.
  • [Finder Only]A script that arranges my Finder windows.
  • [Finder Only]A script that opens a second Finder window and arranges the top two one above the other ready for easy moving or copying between the two.
  • [iPhoto Only]A script that resets the date of multiple selected photos.
  • [iPhoto Only]A script that shifts the date of selected photos +/- a specified amount.
  • [iPhoto Only]A script that shifts the time of selected photos +/- a specified amount.
  • [iPhoto Only]A script that opens my iPhoto Library in Finder.
  • [iPhoto Only]A script that reveals the selected photos or movies in the Finder.
I also have scripts I use to automate iTunes, but iTunes has it's own built-in AppleScript menu (place scripts in ~/Library/iTunes/Scripts).

You don't have to know how to write AppleScript scripts to get good use out of this little menu. You can find a lot of scripts on the internet simply by Googling them.

If anyone is interested in any of the scripts I listed above, let me know.

It's a good thing to run once in a while. Not greatly necessary if you are a light user, unless you are having problems.

That's a bad sign. Better do as it says.
ok fixed my start up disk... something volume header thingy??
lol

anywho what would make startup disk to have errors when its only a week old??
Sometimes things just go boom :)

For the most part this doesn't happen, although it's always a good idea to run disk utility and repair disk and repair permissions. It's not something that absolutely *must* be done, but it's not a bad idea to run it before and after system updates. Onyx and similar utilities are perfect to make it easier.

If the same error comes up continuously *then* you'll have a reason to look deeper. Back up if you are at all worried.

Back up even if you AREN'T worried, and back up regularly, regardless of whether you're having issues or not.

Back up early. Back up often.
