What is a centrist?

Interesting quote found on /.

What exactly is a centrist? The right has fought a successful campaign over the last 30 years or so to move the center to the right. What was once moderate left is now considered far left. What was moderate right is now considered centrist. What was far right is now right, and what was once considered bug-f*#k insane is now simply far right.

I consider myself a centrist because I look at the fringes on either side of me and consider them mad.

However nothing's ever that easy. To many, "centrist" equates with fence-sitting and indecisive.

That is, I think... I'm not sure. Give me some time to commit to that. Or not.
I think we have to think carefully about what type of fence a centrist should sit on--you don't want to offend anyone by choosing a fence in haste.
A centrist is just someone who has not yet made the decision to collaborate with the forces which are ruining our planet, or to take up the fight wholeheartedly against those forces.

They're the deer-in-the-headlights kinda folk, very human, who won't do anything to save themselves from total annihilation until it's far too late to act.

Exactly--and until they kick socialism in the ass, they'll remain there, in mortal danger.
Oh, you're just trying to get a rise out of me... silly fellow. Capitalism is leading us all to ruin, we've just been distracted by all the nice, shiny toys it produces...
Cuba: I think in order to get the world into the shape you want, the majority of people will need to become centrists before moving into your camp. As it is, it must look pretty grim watching the tide move the other way.
...true... like lemmings over a cliff... but that's what you get with overmedicated, celebrity obsessed, uneducated masses. Maybe there really isn't any hope for humanity...

There you go Gerbill. Extremists like Bush and CubaMark have a, "with us or agin' us" view of the world and often simply think that the majority (centrists) don't "get" it. It being their looney extremist political views. Some 'end of the world is nigh' stuff usually helps too. The extreme right and left are actually very similar.

Centrists do quite well when extremists are marginalised. Canada's centrists, with the current mix, are in all the major parties although the Liberals have, in the past, successfully managed to straddle and even help define Canada's political centre.
Just be cautious of extremists posing as centrists. The old 'wolf in sheep's clothing'.
Reading this thread as it inevitably unravels into a veritable playground of sniping, preening egos, reminds me again why I dig the centrist thang. On the one hand I am, apparently, blackguard. One the other... a blackguard. Being reviled by both sides... how cool is that? And now the fresh contention that centrists are really just fascists under cover of blandness. Oh dear, there's just so much to be wary of.

For you, Max, we make an exception--a true "nothing" centrist. A veritable Walter Mitty of a man!

But are you an extreme centrist? :)

If the world were just a collection of black and white moral truths with no complexity and subjectivity to it, extremists may make more sense. As it is, an extremists' primary beef seems to be with non-believers. From bible-thumpers to communists, the problem for the extermists can actually just be people in general not having the right belief -- the devil got them, or they're brainwashed, or both etc.

Another neat thing is that the theoretical beautiful societies that are fought for (to the extreme) depend upon everyone believing in them (and acting on that belief) for them to work. That makes it easier to smite non-believers. They had it coming because they killed the dream.

Who is this impressive "we" you speak of, MF? Or have you given up and gone collectivist?

Yup. Which often has me thinking that, in a world devoid of enemies and beefs, humankind would inevitably find itself obliged to invent them!

The royal "we" Max--and I haven't gone monarchist either!

"I swear it isn't me! I swear it isn't! But I know who it is! I know who the monster is! I know who it is that doesn't belong among us! I swear I know who it is!....It's the kid! It's Tommy! He's the one!"
Yet you drape yourself in royal raiment, Your Dewdness. If it walks like a duck and talks like a duck...

That reminds me of one of the Dune books. God Emperor, perhaps.
That Herbert fella... he was good. Lost me a few times in the Dune series but for the most part I grokked it.

I just meant that, people being people, wretchedness and spite will worm its way in. Kind of like the family of raccoons which keeps trying to set up under my rooftop deck.
