unfortunately many of my friends and relatives still use Windows and aa result I receive many of these wmv s which I cannot open. Is there a program for Mac that will convert or open these things?:

You can also try VLC (available at VersionTracker) which lets you open those pesky AVI files that hate Macs.

Flip4Mac is the defacto WMV player, well it's a component for your Quicktime. It used to be $15 or $30 or something but Microsoft did something to make it free for us.
