We're thinking of making a coffee table base from a large maple log from our backyard. It's been outside for the past three years and we've stripped the bark off it but we're a bit concerned about bringing possible wood-boring bugs inside. Also we want to preserve the wood. Is linseed oil the answer? Does anyone have any experience with this?
Thanks in advance.

Try putting it in a clear plastic bag sealed (as much air out) as best you can (twist tie) for a while. Inspect it after couple weeks to see if any saw dust or any unusual particles appear. If nothing then bring it into the house.

Put your finish on it and enjoy.
