Transfering files from a PC

727 Views 2 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  EvanPitts
I'm trying to get files from my roomate's PC. Were both connect to my wireless router so I figure it should be possible to do it through our network connection.

I have a G4 12" PB, he has a recent HP Laptop.

Any suggestions on how to do this appreciated.

(We've already tried his external HD and an SD card reader with a 2G card but, for some reason, both don't work on my PB... His HD and my card reader both plug in and are recognized by my PB, but only transfer for a short time then get turned off for some reason during the transfer. Both the HD and the Card reader are powered by the USB port. Is it possible the USB on my PB is shot?? Both items work fine on his HP Laptop.)

Thanks.

You have to set up an actual network between the computers, not just the router. You can do this through Airport, and select "Create Network".

It is certainly possible if you Create a Network and turn on Windows File Sharing. But perhaps the easiest way I have found is to use a USB Keychain and format it on the Mac for Windows Compatibility. I use mine with a fair amount of frequency, and for my purposes, it is faster than setting up a network connection for a handful of files.

I also use a Serial Dongle with a Null Modem cable for various legacy systems. For instance, on a DOS machine I run Telix, while on the Mac I run ZTerm - and I just transmit the files with YModem-G (or ZModem). It is a little slow when compared to a network, but should work with basically any legacy system that has a serial port. A Dongle and Null Modem cable cost me about $40 brand new, and I have tranfered thousands of files to the Mac that way, in order to archive the old data; and to update my old data with newer tools available on the Mac, ie. resetting the type on my older documents that I need to keep.
