Help with Transmission?

I downloaded Transmission, but I'm not really sure how to search for things...I typed the name of the file I was looking for into what I thought was a search field at the top right, but nothing's happening. Does Transmission have video files as well?

Oh dear oh dear oh dear.

1. Download a bittorrent client (like Transmission)

2. Go to isohunt.com or mininova.org (this is where you can search for what you want. Music/Apps/Video/ ANYTHING)

3. Find a file you want to download, and download it - this is a small file ending in .torrent

4. Double click the .torrent file - it launches your bittorrent client, in this case, transmission

5. Wait. When you finish downloading, leave it running for the same amount of time, just to be polite (it's all about sharing the download love). Then right click and select "remove from list"

torrentspy.com is quite progressive and efficient because it searches other torrent sites for your search criteria. One downloads, through the button that says download this torrent on whatever torrent site you happen to be on. A .torrent file will appear on one's desktop...take said file and drag and drop into transmission. It will start to download and will create a file with one's files that one wishes to download in.

Keep in mind that the files inside the folder have the names and such of the files one wants but are empty until the torrent is complete. aka they will not work.

Also keep in mind. Not all torrents work. It depends on the number of seeders (people uploading) in relation to leechers (downloaders). If one has very few seeders the torrent will download very slowly. If you have a lot then they will download quickly.

On most torrent sites there is a progress bar beside the torrent indicating the health of the torrent in red (bad)-orange-yellow-green (good). So don't bother with a "dead" torrent or one that is in the red. It wont download.

Enjoy!!

The author of the above post has not endorsed the use of torrent systems for the illegal downloading of copyrighted material without owner permission. The aforementioned article has simply outlined the basic procedure and knowledge necessary for downloading of legal torrents that the copyright owner has agreed with such actions. The author also acknowledges the inability of Canadian law, as it currently stands, to prosecute users of torrents-- copyright owner authorized or not.

haha yes! this is true. Do not enter torrent spy at work, around children, your parents or any older people in general and really any self respecting women.

There are lots of shaking butts and chi chis.

Also note to check comments about whether the torrent is a fake. Someone I --ahem--know wasted a lot of time downloading a set of supposed Three Stooges shorts believed to be in the public domain--and ended up downloading 90 minutes of porn.

knowing the ropes of torrent sites takes experience. It is like learning to ride a bike sort of...I guess. Put it this way. Being on a mac you are much safer learning then if you were on a PC as far as malicious software goes. Its like learning to ride a bike with bubble wrap on. Little can go wrong.

if you are looking for a slick and simple torrent client go with Xtorrent, there is a cost, but it is minor really

xtorrent is weak sauce. Transmission is where its at. Spend your money on a pay for torrent site like demonoid was. On a side note, apparently demonoid has been relaunched, with a different name though.

I have had nothing but good experiences with transmission. Recently there have been wild amounts of updates. Possibly, the buggy-ness you experienced has been patched. Still does not make sense to me, I have been using transmission for years now with little problem.

While I'm sure everyone here is discussing the great benefits of legal torrents and public-domain stuff (cough), I'll open myself up for ridicule by reminding participants that if you "accidentally" download something that is commercially release and/or copyrighted, you are morally obligated to pay the content creator and/or copyright holder. Stealing really does hurt the artist more than anyone else in the process.

Not saying anyone's stealing. Just a reminder, like "don't smoke." :)

save it man...

every-time the word torrent comes up, people feel this need to hop on a soap box, did you ever buy a blank VHS tape, or cassette tape?

did you lend it to a friend, oh my god he may have copied it!

there is a black sedan across the street!

seriously, i know you intentions are good, but please dont feel compelled to "protect" us all every time a legitimate software thread turns to torrents.

there is a plethora of legal software and media available via bit torrents.

i think your solution is part of the larger problem

On the upside, if the entertainment industry went belly up maybe we'd actually focus on things pertinent to the longevity of the human race!

See? The cup is actually half full :p
