I'd be very carefull about Criminal Harassment.
And if you are intending any kind of extra-legal remedies, publishing it in writing here would not be an excellent idea... In fact, the forum owners could justifiably get their shirts in a knot about such threats on their lists. Promises of bodily harm trump allegations of mail fraud in attracting official attention...

I don't think anyone here wants to inflict bodily harm on this guy.....people just want there money back....plain and simple. I mean it would be a bonus to have this guy booked buy a cop..........but at the end of the day...I would say most people just want to retrieve there funds and take this as a lesson learned.....(i.e.: deal locally next time!).

Wow, that's nuts. Sue the police department.

Heck if you guys know the real identity of this Andrew Carter fella, sue him in small claims court. It costs like dirt cheap to sue somebody under small claims... like $25 bucks or so. I'm not sure what happens with inter provincial suits.

I'd like to hurt him in ways, I would not be allowed to describe here on good ol' ehMac. ;) :)

As expected, Paypal didn't do anything for me. They could not recover the funds, etc. I don't really understand their statement when they said

"We hope you understand our policy and that it assures you that you are safe using PayPal. "

I guess I am missing the point about their policy... how did it "assure" that I was safe using Paypal?

This John Howard or andrew carter can easily on this site become any name to steal anyone's money? It affects all of us here. So I think everyone has a duty to really try to stop these guys at any cost. I know of three people on this site that was taken by johnathan howard including me.Using paypal didn't do a thing in protecting me! Paypal gives you the run around, until you're tired and then go away.
http://paypalsucks.com/ is a great site to really get to know these guys!
I hope the webmaster will do something about this situation from these to guy's . Contact the rcmp and do something to protect your site webmaster.

I think I may have been nearly scammed by this same guy. It was about 6 months after the iMac G5's came out and he said he had a 20" for sale for $1200. I thought this sounded like a good deal, and since I have family in Montreal I thought they could go look at it. I got the same response saying he worked at nights so he wouldn't be home. When I asked for his phone number so I could call and ask him questions about it and know his phone number was legit his reply was along the lines of....

"I was in a motorcycle accident two years ago and lost the use of my vocal chords. Now I cannot speak on the phone so you cannot contact me by phone"

I realize you may not return to this site (1 post), at least under this username, but if you had read this thread you would know that it isn't two people, it is probably only one.

May be part of the problem...

Here is my John Howard story. He posted a 15in powerbook a while ago. Price was best offer so I emailed him with some questions and he answered. I didn't reply but he mailed me a few days later with the bait. He wanted only $750 shipping included. Too good to be true. He listed his location as some small town near Montreal, in Ontario. I mailed back with more Qs and told him I will drive out from the GTA to pick up. That was the last I heard from him. The ad was pulled for a few days and then relisted. I mailed him a few more times to no avail.
I was not surprise to see his name as a possible scammer.

Everyone knows that John Howard is also a name used by the John Howard Society, a group that tries to help male prision / jail inmates and paroles, right?

I though the irony was too good to be true.

Woah--Racial profiling, out and out racial prejudice and the threat of physical violence. Welcome to the good ole USofA cause this can't be Canada. Nobody said sorry or anything concillatory.

Bottom Line to all this ranting, winning and crying Buyer Beware if you don't know who you are dealing with. Deal face to face or:
1 have stuff sent COD
2 buy through ebay
3 escrow purchases can work (did this with a guy in England)
4 if its too good to be true it probably isn't, there are very, very few bargins

You have to protect yourself and you can't expect this board or any other to be your defence against people who want to take you and your own ..........

just my two cents

My 2 cents. Used Macs tend to retain good value, and after pouring over countless ads and auctions, I came to the realization that, in the end, it is probably best to buy brand new, since there are not that many good bargains out there. No headaches, no scams, full warranty. I am waiting for Macworld to see what products are announced; at that point, there will be some good deals on "clearance" Macs. Remember when the new Imac G5s came out in October; "clearance" G5s were $500 to $600 cheaper.
