I first learned this on the macnn.com boards. http://www.apple.com/powerbook/specs.html now shows the 17" PowerBook being capable of writing DVD-R discs at only 1x speed. That's kind of a disappointment - I thought it was another step into the future when I first saw the 2x rating on the 7th. And, now it's all a lie. I think quite a few who've already ordered are going to be screaming at their screens as this is learned. Maybe the PowerBooks ARE capable of 2x including the old - like others have said, Apple possibly crippled the drive.

Apple's safe because they've got their "Product specifications are subject to change without notice," in their PDF.

Any thoughts on this new info?

***As of 6:40pm EST today, http://www.apple.com/ca/powerbook/specs.html still has the SuperDrive rated at 2x DVD-R writing capability.***

There seems to be some abiguity regarding the SuperDrive's speeds. Apple's 17" Powerbook info page lists a 2x speed, while the "Tech Specs" page lists it as 1x.
However, the Tech Specs page lists 2 models of SuperDrive; one as installed in the 12 PB and one as installed in the 15 & 17" models. The specs for both are the same, despite the fact that there are 2 separate listings.

You should contact Apple to confirm the details. It does appear that the 15 & 17 inch models are supposed to have a different model drive than the 12" PB; which implies perhaps a 2x write speed on those models. There should be some confirmation from Apple on the discrepancy.
