Wow.. am I amazed!

It is almost 10:00 pm and I am off to bed... long day. Long week. Hence this will not be a complete count as there is 2 hours left

I have received 144 email messages today. 12 real...132 SPAM. For the last month or so I had tallied an average of 45% SPAM. But today takes the cake.

Amazing. It was obviously a slow email day as usually Fridays are, but not for the morons who continue to send out SPAM. I don't read it, my filters catch it and on top of that takes way too long to go through and dump em. The 50+ MS hoax SWEN Virus emails at 140+k each and in HTML take a while to come in and load.

Plus the other beauties.

Porn
Viagara
Home business
Nigerian scams
even a SPAM to help me get rid of SPAM - but of course the link was corrupt and a secondary site was in Japanese... way too cool!

How can something as elegant, beautiful and powerful as the Internet be rendered useless by idiots. Well obviously not too terribly difficultly.

i will no doubt change my email address. Well, not change it as I have a few I already use to pick and choose from, but the main one [email protected] go.

I haven't even started to contemplate what is involved in this as I have had this address for over 10 years.

Pity... I liked it.

One tip for the future, if you are going to put your email address on a website, either don't use your main one or include an extra word so that the spam robots don't pick it up.

For example, instead of writing pete at themose.com in your message/profile, write in peteNOSPAM at the mose.com. Alternately, just write it out in full, 'pete at themose dot com'

What email client are you using? Does it have any kind of built in Spam filtering? I have been trying out SpamSieve with MS Entourage for the last few days, and it works great. The documentation says you should fill SpamSieve's corpus with 600 messages (both real and spam) before it will start being truly accurate, but so far I have but 48 messages and it is getting just about all the spam I get.

My statistics so far:

Filtered Mail
14 Good Messages
31 Spam Messages (2.2:1)

SpamSieve Accuracy
0 False Positives
10 False Negatives
77.8% Correct

Corpus
16 Good Messages
32 Spam Messages (2.0:1)
3138 Total Words

Showing Statistics Since
9/10/02 3:00 PM

As you can see, it has missed a couple of junk messages, but it hasn't flagged any real messages as spam yet. Check it out here.

I don't get unmanageable amounts of spam in my .Mac mail account for some reason - I suspect that Apple just quietly ditches a lot of it. Fine with me - I'm not losing any real mail AFAIK.

Cheers :-> Bill

Thanks for the tip Posterboy.
SpamSieve seems to work very well in Entourage even on the early going. It has some reporting issues with Panther = I can't get stats for example but the functionality works well so far.

Q: Do I need to open SS every time I open Entourage??

Working very well - I'll put this in the next email as it's top of mind for many.

SPAM is the work of the devil and, like The National Do Not Call List (and, I hope this gets to Canada before the iTunes Music Store! ), there ought to be a National Do Not Spam list.

Speaking of iTunes Music Store, DON'T HOLD YOUR BREATH for it to come to Canada. I emailed CRIA (Canada's RIAA) and they have not even been contacted by Apple, yet. I then contacted Apple Canada, and they could offer me no info about it at all (surprise surprise
