Upgrade, from a machine that was about 2 weeks old...
If you were one of my clients with the described symptoms I'd be telling you right now to do a
clean install as a base step to troubleshooting. Potentially, this is all you would have to do.
I tend to mention 'clean install' on the boards every time there is a system upgrade (ie. 10.4 -> 10.5, etc.) the same as I tend to suggest using combo updaters (ie. 10.5.2 ->10.5.3, etc.).
I get some grief for this policy along the lines of "Macs are supposed to be easy to use so you should just be able to just upgrade". Should... schmould... That is as may be and is open to debate, but the fact remains that this policy of mine in many years of experience and many clients results in fewer glitches and irritations.
One may still experience some issues, but at least the integrity of the OS has been eliminated as a potential source.
I watch with some frustration as folk who "upgrade" spend time and energy troubleshooting stuff that just never seems to show up if they had just done clean/combo in the first place. I guess it depends on where you want to put your effort or how little one values one's time, but I will personally stick to the axiom of
doing right in the first place. My own clean install of SnoLeo has experienced none of the "Snow Leopard bugs" that so much time has been spent on (arguably, wasted on) on this and on other boards. The same goes for all my clients who use the clean/combo method.
Just sayin'.....
