Shopping experiences at Apple's refurb store

My new (to me) refurb MacBook arrived today and to my surprise, there was an extra GB of RAM installed (for a total of 2).

As if getting a new computer wasn't exciting enough, that was the icing on the cake. :D

Congrats on your new purchase! Those extra perks in the refurbs make it a bit of a lottery -- but it feels awesome when you get them! (I got extra RAM too)!

You'll love your macbook, it's a great machine.
awesome!
my next mac is going to be a refurb
Free upgrades with refurbs appear as if Apple just lists the factory specifications, but the actual refurbs (read: some) had upgrades done to them when in the past which wasn't noted. I'd be some-what surprised if Apple is upgrading them free of charge as a bonus to the customer before being shipped out.

You are totally right. The "free" upgrades are YMMV of course. People return all kinds of computers to apple, some are stock models, some are upgraded. Apple just puts them all into a big pile, AFAIK. So it's really luck of the draw. My refurb iMac CoreDuo had no upgrades, but my MacBook had extra RAM. Sometimes you get lucky.

It's kinda like when they had the silent Upgrade on the MacMini G4 -- the box/Online site lists the *minimum* specs of the machine you'll recieve. You may get more/bonus upgrades.
I assumed that it was luck of the draw. I also think it's highly unlikely that Apple intentionally upgraded me. I'm just lucky that I didn't go ahead and pick up the extra GB of RAM in advance of receiving the computer (which I was tempted to do).
