Just a quick Q?: what kind of file is it? Is there no way of opening this in X?

The format is PDF for 10.2.x a.k.a Jaguar and TIFF for earlier versions.

You can use Preview to view the PDF or export as JPEG, and others. You can also use /Applications/Utilities/Grab to make your screenshots. Grab saves as Tiff.

PDF?? I don't seem to be able to open via x2 click. Are they still placed in the system folder after they're shot? I think that I may be lost here - I just shot a few and I've lost track of them. The previous shot is not opening in Preview either...

Here at Apple Support shows ya how to get a screen capture.
Mine puts a .pdf on the desktop.
Or you could open up 'Grab' in Utillites and save it as a .tiff :D
