Are there differences in noise levels in hard drive brands of the same size and specs? I'm thinking about purchasing an auxilliary internal drive (20-40 meg, 7200 rpm). Any particular brand you would recommend (or not) from a noise standpoint?

I've got an IBM 40GB drive that shipped in my desktop and an added internal Seagate 20GB. They're not too loud. It's a slightly louder with the second drive, but not much. Then again, I generally have the radio on when working.

We find IBMs the most noisy when new.
Maxtor most noisy when aging they can get LOUD
Maxtor Liquid bearing pretty quiet and likely to stay so ( they KNOW they had a problem)
The 40 gig WD w 8 meg cache is quiet the 80 and 120s a bit noisier
Seagates seem very quiet these days - the 40 gig with the rubber jacket is very quiet but only 5400 RPM.
Unless you are doing digital audio or video the 5400 rpm are quiet and reliable - that's what I use for backup.
Michael your best route might be the 40 gig WD if you want speed and quiet and 3 year warranty. I mean it is a truly FAST drive.

The Western Digital ones with the large cache sizes are among the quieter ones i have heard these days.

The Maxtor 40GB 7200 RPM Drive is not too bad though, and priced farily attractively these days.

I agree the Maxtor is quiet and well priced but the combo of the WD speed and warranty is well worth the few extra dollars.
