I want to attach a media server to my HDMI equipped flat screen TV (52 inch) and an old-school stereo receiver. Basically, I want to be able to select music, photos and home videos. Ease of use is a primary concern. I would go with Apple TV but it lacks web-surfing capability. So, I'm thinking of buying a basic Mac Mini instead.

So my question - is there anything I can do with the Apple TV that I can't do with a Mac Mini?

What about the automatic update of media libraries within the Apple TV (from other computers on the network)? Can I set that up with the Mac Mini? I know just enough about Macs to be dangerous.

Why not buy the Apple TV and install OSX on it?
Worst advice ever. Installing OS X on an Apple TV is doable, but a novelty at best.

If you want full functionality, go the Mac mini route.

Then, add an Elgato EyeTV hrybrid as an HD TV Tuner.

Maybe add an external HD for more media.

There are enough freeware tools availbel to sync iTunes libraries across multiple Macs.

I wouldn't really want to hack an Apple TV anyways. Too much hassle.

I also don't intend to add a TV tuner. AFAIK, you can't get HD through the TV tuners so I'll just keep my satellite receiver hooked up. I want the Mac as a media server to get rid of the hundreds of CD cases as well as consolidate all my digital photos and home movies.
