I found this most interesting:

I've read on the internet, and have seen many news reports with interviews of people planning on buying the iPhone just to use it as an iPod and organizer. Poque seems to be saying that you won't be able to use it at all without activating it with AT&T.

That comes directly from Apple -- there's a quote in the TOS for the iPhone that says that all features (including iPod Features) are locked until the phone is activated on a 2 year AT&T contract.

I'd be surprised if -- just in time for Christmas -- new touchscreen iPods are released... and they'll be cheaper, too.
