I tried pluggin in a generic microphone into my macbook so I can record something on garageband. I set the input device to the built-in input. When I talk on the mic, it is soooo quiet I can barely hear it. When I use the macbook's built-in mic, it's nice and loud and clear.

Anyway to fix this? I would've thought using a mic would be more clear.

So will this iMic do the trick? Does it amplify the sound of the microphone?

What if I want to plug in a keyboard to the mac. Will that signal be strong enough or do I need to amplify that as well?

A keyboard in will work fine. Make sure to take the line level outputs (and not a headphone output). THe iMic will pre-amplify things as needed and work fine for you.
