Qualcomm punished with phone import ban

By Kathryn Balint

Virtually all new models of cell phones containing Qualcomm chips will be banned from import into the United States under a trade agency order issued yesterday that could mean far fewer new handset models for the December holidays.

iPhone is not using Qualcomm's 3G chipset.

TidBITS: Apple iPhone Won't Be Barred Under Ruling

"Many pundits and journalists opined that by charging $500 or $600 for the iPhone (depending on capacity) and by including a slower-than-3G cell connection, Apple had missed the boat - forgetting, of course, that smartphones are only gradually adding 3G networking, few offer 3G and Wi-Fi in a single offering (and none allow seamless network handoffs), and that other smartphones cost in the hundreds of dollars.

With new Qualcomm-based 3G phones banned, Apple may get the last laugh."

What, you think Apple has built a factory and has little Apple elves making cell phones? No, they do what what they do with everything else, subcontract it out and get an Apple logo etched on it.
The only thing the LG and iPhone have in common is that they're cell phones and have touch screens. That's it. Apple has done so much engineering with the iPhone, it doesn't matter who actually builds them.

Calling the iPhone a copy of the LG Prada is like calling the Mac OS a copy of Windows.

I don't know why people even entertain the idea that one is a clone of the other. They were both announced too close to each other for either company to have copied the other. LG's claims were fairly ridiculous and reveal just how badly Apple's announcement damaged their launch -- people see the Prada now as "like the iPhone" rather than its own device, and any hope of Americanizing it (outside of importers) has pretty much been shot.
