From my experience, the RealOne player for Mac OS X is an improvement over the OS 9 hideous waste of electrons.
RealPlayer will play files that are .rm and .ram. I don't think it can play a whole lot of other formats.
Other than .WVM and .ASF files, the only type I have troubles with are some .AVI files. Pretty much any other format will work with either QuickTime or RealPlayer.
As for music, such as MP3s, I pretty much exclusively use iTunes. It's just the best!
