So thanks to milhaus here at ehmac, I've got my hands on a brand new 120GB OWC SSD and have just installed it. Thought I would share some benchmarks, before and after.

Before (320GB 4200rpm):
Seq Read Avg = 45.87
Seq Write Avg = 45.7
Ran Read Avg = 12.17
Ran Write Avg = 15.66

OWC SSD (120GB blazing):
Seq Read Avg = 131.64
Seq Write Avg = 118.77
Ran Read Avg = 120.17
Ran Write Avg = 116.82

The extended test results are astoundingly better:
320GB
20-100MB avg:
Read 51.60
Write 51.27

SSD
20-100MB avg:
Read 268.41
Write 206.57

For the record I am not affiliated with OWC, but I have bought a few things from them here and there over the years. This being the best purchase ever imho. I've put this drive in my Macbook and put the drive that came with the Macbook (250GB) into an external case. I've actually got the 320GB drive that came with the MacMini in the Macbook, installed with the data doubler from OWC (so no optical drive). Am thinking of using this as the Time Machine and CCC for the SSD. (I've picked up a 500GB that now resides in the Mini).

I've literally just completed the install and will play with it some more but thought I would share some quick comments. So far this thing is lightning fast!

^^^^^^

Yeah I installed the same OWC SSD in my 2008 mini...best upgrade ever.

Congrats.
Agreed. SSD's can breath new life into "old" machines. I loved the one i put in my MBP and I'm considering doing the same in my iMac.
When I purchased the SSD from OWC I chose the free shipping route which took about 10 biz days to deliver. Knowing now what improvements going SSD make I don't think I could wait 2 weeks for the next tweak. I've gone toaster system for backups but an SSD to work on is as good as it gets.
I didn't know that OWC had a free shipping option to Canada. How was it sent?

I used the amazon checkout system that gave me $5 off which covered the US post option charge of $4.95 for delivery. So I made .05 on shipping.
I received my 120 OWC SSD last week as well. Indeed it provides a new snappiness to my now aging 2006 MP 1.1. The other things that are great is that it is dead silent and draws very little power... both a couple of little bonuses.

I can hardly wait for the day when prices of of SSDs fall enough and their sizes go up enough to be running all SSDs, but with 20 drives right now, that isn't going to happen anytime soon for me, that is unless I win the lottery in which case all these energy hungry, noisy and slow HDs are going out the window it will be all SSD all the way for me. :D
I'm considering the move to ssd for the mbp, I played with an air yesterday the speed was killer. But I need at least 250gigs, I need to price to come down some.

Not sure that I want to blow the warranty with the optical flip.

There is also this option if you live close to the border. I've used it once so far and it's a great alternative for places that either do not deliver to Canada or charge huge shipping costs or ship with UPS that rape your wallet with their brokerage fees.

Of course free shipping to Canada with Amazon checkout sounds better.
If you ask nice ;) we'll sell any OWC at parity and ship Canada Post.....jest sayin' :D
Save time and headaches.

Any OWC product at all?

I'd sure like to know more or how.

The last time I tried with a purchase using their Amazon checkout option I was told either that I didn't have an account and/or with the account working it said shipping to Canada was not available as an option. Hmmm...???

Maybe I'll check out the MacDoc comment and offer. ;-)
