hey all, I know you're always taking some element of risk when dealing with ebay sellers. This seller seems legitimate to me. Any opinions?

eBay.ca: Apple iMac 24" 2.16GHz + PRINTER WARRANTY EXTRAS (item 260147436869 end time 15-Aug-07 01:44:39 EDT)

There's nothing that jumps out as bad on this seller -- good feedback, realistic stuff (that is, no shill-type no-value reputation building sales), PayPal protection seems to be in place.

Downsides: you'll pay a boatload for shipping and clearing, perhaps $150 - $200, plus GST and Provincial tax. And they are asking CAN$1580 as the buy it now price

Apple.ca has a refurb 24" iMac C2D for CAN$1589 and free shipping with a full year warranty. no cross border hassles. The printer is a freebee that is often offered with the purchase of a Mac (I got one with the purchase of a refurb. MacBook C2D two weeks ago) so it's nothing to write home about.

So I would say you'd have to be nuts to go for the eBay deal across the border. You'll pay more for less warranty and more risk.

Looks pretty good. Seller has a high rating and is 100% positive. He has sold computer equipment before, so he has experience in selling high priced items. I say go for it.

It may be fine, but why take the chance? You can get an Apple refurb on an identical model with a new warranty for the same price. Not sure if you can get the printer with it.

The Apple Store (Canada)
don't know where my mind is these days, I'd forgotten about paying taxes on top of shipping. I got a shipping quote at 70$ via Fedex and he's offered to pay for the insurance. But I suppose I'd still get stuck with around 250$ in taxes...
I think the apple store refurb exceeds my credit limit on my credit card...does anyone know if you can order refurb products through a uni campus apple store?

Yup, and about $60 - $75 in customs brokerage on top.

You can't get the Apple online refurbs through any other source other than the Apple Canada Online Store itself.

If you're a student, look at apple's education pricing. I believe the base 24" is about $1250 and you get a free (after rebate) nano. You're also eligible for the $130 printer rebate too. Check with your campus store. They should have pricing and details.

Check your facts:

Too many of us are under the false impression Apple actually gives out substantial discounts to students. The base 24" iMac with the educational discount is $1799 plus taxes (only $100 off retail). The base 20" is $1249 plus taxes (only $50 off retail).

You could try putting a credit on your card so that the total doesn't exceed your limit. You could also call your CC company and ask for an increase. So long as you've no issues with them, they'd likely do it. They like giving out credit. Many years ago I had my car broken in to and needed to increase my CC limit to pay for the bill. No problem at all.

Thanks Lars, my mistake. I was thinking 20", typing 24"

true, that's definately an option worth exploring...I stopped in to future shop on the way home from work to checkout the original core 2's.

...my god 24" is huge! lol 20" looked quite small, but mabye that's because it was standing shoulder to shoulder with a screen 4" larger lol
