Could the OpenMoko be an iPhone killer?

Forget iPhone said:
It is something that follows a paradigm painfully different from the one of Apple, pretty much completely opposite of it actually. It is a phone which rivals Apple's iPhone as a technological concept and is yet based on completely open technologies, fully extensible by anyone and fully under control of its user.

Much as I am something of an Apple fanboy, I find this very interesting - completely open, so one should be able to SIM card it anywhere.... More later.

Can't really be an iPhone killer if it isn't ready for the mainstream. The company is only selling a developer's preview right now.
I just got off the phone from talking to these guys. Right now, it is a 'developer' phone but should go public in October. Just pop the GSM SIM card out of your current phone and into the OpenMoko and you are good to go. Does WiFi, don't know about Edge but the I personally don't care about that. Remains to be seen what developers can produce. I'm keeping an eye on this and if I can't get an iPhone (cracked as a phone w/WiFi or legit) by October I may well go this way. It will be interesting to see how it deals with music and video but the screen resolution is better than iPhone......

It would be hard to say the an iPhone is 'ready for mainstream' here in Canada either... ;)
like the idea of an opensource phone, but it looks like a bad palm pilot ripoff.
With that design, the screen should be bigger, but the idea sounds good. I'd worry about hackability.

Does anyone with knowledge of how the technology (network and software) works have any comments? Sometimes good ideas make no sense in application. Sometimes.

Curious comment seeing as everyone is trying to hack the crap out of the iPhone!! :D

In the dreams of the developers, I suppose. Not in the real world.
