...and more "joy" from Microsoft....

Just did whatever the latest Urgent! Critical! OhGodIfYouDon'tDoThisKittensWIllDie! update from Microsoft...

Then went to work on a translation I have pending.

Now every 10 minutes or so I get a crash alert: "Office365service Quit Unexpectedly".

Stupid Microsoft.

Hmmm... a bit of an almost year old thread, but regardless, it would be nice to know what MS Office etc. and Mac and OS X version you are using.

But you do have a backup you can use and revert to no??

Yet another free ad for Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper.

Back-up then Up-date should be completely ingrained by now.

pm-r, I'm running Office 2011 (14.3.1) - the latest, fully-patched version. It's the damn patch that caused the problem... "improvements" my shiny behind.

OS X 10.8.2 on a late-2012 MacBook Pro... but a cursory search of the web finds many other Office 2011 users in the same boat... this damn web service thing is being launched every time you open Word or Excel or whatever. Doesn't seem to be any easy way to disable it. Tried renaming the file... no-go. Word keeps crashing.

In any event, since the project I'm working on at the moment is a simple translation, I don't need to be too concerned with formatting compatibility, etc., so I said goodbye to Word and am getting the job done using LibreOffice 4.0 - no problems.... hope Microcrap gets another patch out to fix their crappy code soon.

eMacMan - yeah, I know, but... what a pain in the rear to have to do this every time... FYI, Microsoft's only response to the problem? Uninstall Office and reinstall it... like I'm going to waste my time....

I'd have to have a very compelling reason to do the reinstall part of that advice.

I'm sorry CubaMark, but I don't have a solution or suggestion for your nor other's similar problem.

I guess I'm lucky and fortunate that I can and do run SL 10.6.8 as my main OS where the things I need just seem to work.

But I did have to do some fixing and updates for some quirks on my cousin's 2008 MacBook today, that included a 'critical' MS Office '08 update, but it all went well and as expected.

Some of the latest Mac OS X "new and improved" stuff and other third party software seems to be quite the opposite for many users from what I've read lately. Not good. :(

Just in case some users are having any update problems with some software, at least with SL OS 10.6.8, such 'updates' from and specifically with:
- MS Office '08 and later
- Most later Adobe apps
- Flip4Mac
and maybe a few others, their 'updates' will NOT work if one has used a 'trimming' app/utility.

Monolingual.app is one exception I know of, but only if such apps/suites/utilities mentioned above have been 'exempted' in Monolingual's preferences.

So... anyone done some uncontrolled 'trimming' lately? And I can think of several utilities that do so. ;)

I'm probably missing out on some really good advanced features, but I got into the habit of still using Office 2004 for Word and Excel.
I have both Office 2008 and Office 2011 but I try not to use them unless absolutely necessary - like to open a .docx document for instance.

The really annoying thing is that I ca't set Word 2004 and Excel 2004 as my default application to open .doc and .xls documents.
Every time I do that, word 2011 and Excel 2011 somehow take over after opening a few documents and I haven't found a way around that.
So now I go the "open with" route.

I doubt you're missing out on anything other an the headaches I've described in this thread and others re: Office 2011...

I've said it before, I'll say it again: Microsoft Word 5.1a was the last version that worked as it should...

I didn't know that you could have multiple versions of Office installed at the same time. I remember being hesitant to delete 2008 when I got 2011, but the installer insisted (as I recall).

I don't know about any MS Office '11 install and I'm so far avoiding having to install it.

But all previous MS Office version installs all allowed them to be installed and kept and coexist on my Macs, from Office '04 to '08. And even the updates would work and install after searching my Mac volumes for various versions.

I just double-checked the versions I have installed.
Sorry, made a mistake,
I have versions X, 2004 and 2011; I do have version 2008 as well but not installed.
Quite possible that it was deleted when I installed 2011.

So here's my latest headache...

I'm reformatting a manuscript for publication according to a particular publishing house's style guide.

The author of one of the chapters decided - for reasons known only to him - to insert his endnote refs with about 80% using a custom mark "[1]" and the remainder using the standard Arabic convention 1, 2, 3, etc. So this stupid Endnote list goes [1] [2] [3] 1 2 [4] 3 etc.

How the heck do I force Word to renumber these all with standard Arabic numbers?

And of course, this is due yesterday....

I'm using Microsoft 360 and its no picnic. Had to upgrade from 2011 to this because one client could simply NEVER open a file I created in 2011. Frequent crashes, spinning beachballs, file closures, and random reformatting of text. Lots of false update alerts that demand action and then tell you "there are no updates." A horrible mess.

LibreOffice 5 is now my default Word-authoring program in my office. I'm sick and tired of Microsoft's bull****.

Which is the better or preferred replacement, OpenOffice or LibreOffice I believe are the two main ones, but I always get confused and I thought one of them was not being supported properly.

All so confusing for an old senior's brain but one who doesn't really need either.

I cannot imagine using Word for anything but text. In my opinion if you are wanting to mix text and images you need a page layout program. Now I am no fan of Publisher because I work in print, but for home use it will do what you need.

At least Microsoft has given options for their software and not forced a subscription model on people. You can still buy outright the core apps.

OpenOffice has been all but abandoned. Last release was October 2016 (v.4.1.3). Apparently, there are developers preparing a 4.1.4 release. Read more about its status here.

LibreOffice is the most frequently updated, still-being-developed version of the suite, and with v.5.x has really come into its own.

NeoOffice is another variant, specific to OS X which touts features not in either of the other two (Open / Libre). Most recent release was August 2017.
