Check in your Audio Setup app (in Utilities) to make sure that it didn't set your sample rate to 96khz. This has happened to me a few times in the past with both flash and realplayer and was a real headscratcher. Going back to 44.1khz solved all the issues.
I don't know how you ended up figuring this one out, but it worked!
Oddly enough my speakers were set at 44.1kHz, but my microphone was at 96. How a mike set up not used in the application at all (it is a PLAYER) can screw up the app is beyond comprehension...
