As many of you know, there are now a few Final Cut Pro User Groups in Canada:

Final Cut Montréal
http://www.finalcutmtl.org/

FCP Québec - Québec Final Cut Pro User Group
http://www.fcp.ca

VFCPUG - Vancouver Final Cut Pro User Gorup
http;//www.vfcpug.org

FCPUGTO - Toronto Final Cut Pro User Group
http://www.fcpugto.com

CFCPUG - Calgary Final Cut Pro User Group
(now starting up!)
http://www.emotionent.com/perl/yabb/YaBB.cgi

It seems as if most other major cities in Canada have a FCP User Group, including some places with a smaller population than Ottawa. Some in the city have recently expressed an interest in forming an Ottawa digital video / postproduction group, focussing on topics related to production and postproduction of digital video, especially tools such as Final Cut, DVD Studio Pro, etc. Most people want an inexpensive or free group where they can get together with other digital video enthusiasts monthly and get advice, see demonstrations and presentations on practical techinques and new tools, and network with others in the industry. We would be hoping to form an open, informal group and this message is just meant to guage interest.

Would anyone here from Ottawa be interested in a local Final Cut Pro / DV / Postproduction group? Do you know anyone who would be interested in being part of such a group? Or perhaps someone that could give a talk on aspects of cinematography or postproduction at monthly meetings? Please forward this message to anyone who you think might have some interest, and reply to [email protected] if you would like to attend a founding meeting or for more information.

Thanks

Hi mannyp,

Could you send an e-mail to [email protected] and we'll discuss with you of possible meeting locations, times, etc. What we were thinking of was to start it off as a SIG (special interest group) of the local Mac User Group, since there might be an already-interested bunch of people there that have been exposed to FCP & digital video, and want to learn more. The group could be spun off separately as it grows larger. We've started talking about it on the user group message board at:

(Thread: "Suggestions to Promote...")

...and would welcome any suggestions or ideas you have. Tell anyone you know interested in DV in the area, and thanks!

The Calgary FCPUG is working on an full blown website as well, but all the information can be obtained until that time at the link listed above in the CGYFCPUG thread (Or you can use the www.emotiondv.com URL)

Next meeting is on Nov 24th

I am glad to see that others are trying to build up groups in their area's, it is so nice to be able to collaberate with your peers on new and exciting technology and techniques that can only help better yourself in the end!

Hey MacDaddy,

Great to hear from you, looks like things are shaping up in Calgary. Quick question: how do you get the word out for your group? Aside from the people in my immediate circle, I wonder how to advertise the group to interested people my circle wouldn't normally have contact with. Ideas?

Algonquin Documentary Production Class

Algonquin College is running with its first post graduate course in Documentary Production. The editing software is FCP. I have let the class know of the existance of this site - and asked about interest in setting up an Ottawa FCP group.

Stay tuned.

Has there been any action to set up a user group?

Well, I would be interested in finding out what the correct technique for letting out a full volume howl of anguish and heaving a MacBook Pro across the room in an artistic pique of rage is when Final Cut goofs up an insert edit. beejacon

Hi,
The Ottawa Final Cut Pro Users group held several meetings last year and then sort of died.
The group was sort of an offshoot of the Bymug group.
I started a page early this year...
OFCPUG but the meetings ceased before I created it.
The local Carbon Computing store was helping us out, and the famous Graham Nattress of Nattress Filters came out to a meeting or two.

So, I would be interested and might be able to provide a very good meeting location.
Let me know.
It might be polite to email W. Thomas Leroux the original founder and see what the heck is up.
He is a member here.
He goes by wtl

There were a few of us, such as Soy Mac that attended the meetings who were members.
It was and is a good idea and I am definately interested.
Cheers,
OM

Hey all

The thing with the Ottawa FCP group was... well, no one really seemed interested. We had a few meetings, and yes, I think we had 8 or so come out, but then it fizzled.

The hard part is getting demos - I'd happily try starting it up again, if there was sufficient demand. Previously, we met at a couple of times in a pub and then at a downtown community centre (with parking) to keep things central.

What say y'all?

Final Cut Pro needed

Hey I found Out that I'm going to Need Final Cut Pro, especially since I am Starting my Own Production Business and Is currently filming an Anti-drug Commercial for my school and hopefully good enough for the Ottawa police department. I am wondering where in Ottawa I could find a good deal on a final cut pro program in Ottawa. Does anyone know?
