However it does read DVD+Rs just fine. Whenever I pop in DVD-Rs it just goes in undetected and unnoticed. Maybe I should have got the Superdrive option. Is this supposed to happen with Combo drives? Hopefully, Apple can fix this problem.

This should not happen, take it in for service.

Are you using Apple media? Sometimes the drives can be sensitive....
