Can someone point me in the direction of a simple .avi player for Jaguar? Quicktime won't play them.

Where you need to go is DivX.com, and download the Mac divx codecs, this will enable you to play most AVI files in OS X. In fact it will let you play any DivX AVI that uses MP3 Audio, which is about 90%.
You will come across the odd one that wont play though, and that is usually because the AVI has been encoded with WMA Audio instead of MP3.

There is also a handy utility you can get with the third party DviX Codecs from Jamby called AVI2MOV, which converts AVI files to QT format. I will see if I can find that one and post you a link.

Windows Media Player wont play AVI files correctly. At least my copy doesnt. In fact WMP for mac has problems playing a lot of formats that it really shouldn't have problems with. The only thing it is good for really is streaming audio/video.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, I'll DIVX when I get home tonight. I downloaded WMP and it won't work, neither will AVI2MOV... it just crashes.

Avi2Mov is not as good as Divx Doctor II.
Divx Doctor II can even convert DivX files with WMA audio (albeit you need to find the WMA codec (ask me if you need it, I have it) and you have to do the conversion in OS 9). Go here to download it: http://doctor.3ivx.com/

You will also need to download and install the 3ivx codec.

Divx Doctor II fixes lots of audio problems, while avi2mov just blindly converts the files.

Also I have not had success using avi2mov with QuickTime 6.

Avi2Mov works just fine for me under Jaguar/QT6
DivX Validator resyncs audio in AVI files to make them playable if you have the DivX codecs installed.

It is also worth noting that the WMA converting in OS 9 is not so much a codec as it is a hack, and it is a little tempermental. It does work though.
