My new printer hates my Airport

I posted about this a week ago, under a different title because I wasn't sure what was going on. Didn't get any useful answers. Now I think I can word the problem better.
I got an Epson R800 photo printer, which I want to use with my Airport Express so my iBook and my sister's iBook can print. They both have Airport Extreme cards.
My previous printer, an Epson 960, worked perfectly with the Airport Express.

The R800, however, only works properly when on a wired connection. Connect it to the Airport and documents print, but slowly, and photos hardly at all -- 20 minutes for a 5x7! It does the same when printing from my desktop, which is a mere 3 feet from the airport.

The suggestion I got from my earlier post was to buy a new USB 2 cable. Did that. Didn't help.
I also cleared all traces of my old Epson driver from my computer, downloaded the latest one (which i think is still the same as my old one) and installed it. Made no difference.

I can't understand what's going on. the printer is obviously getting the signal, or it wouldn't print at all. So why the speed difference?

BTW, I did contact Epson and their reply was a list of instructions on how to set up the printer on a Mac. They keep referring, interchangeably, to Bonjour and Rendezvous. And they call the airport, Airport Extreme -- that shouldn't make a difference, should it?

Help appreciated.

A few thoughts...

• Definitely read the following web page...
http://www.macworld.com/2005/05/secrets/julymobilemac/index.php

• Try the new Gutenprint R800 driver (formerly Gimp-Print), they've improved it...
4) The Epson Stylus Photo R800, R1800, R2400, and related printers
should now print at full speed in all cases. Previously these
printers were extremely slow (about 10 times slower than normal)
in many cases.

• Here's another approach to a similar problem...

Good luck, I know how frustrating it can be. :(

Thanks gwillikers. I'll try those options tomorrow.
Hi,

I'm not in front of my Mac right now so I can't give specific direction.

The first thing that I thought of with your printing problem is how you have your settings arranged. I think in Printer Setup Utility there is a print setting telling the computer to use USB or Rendezvous (I think its called Bonjour now). You want it set to Rendezvous for Airport to work with the printer, and it is something you have to set manually as I believe the default is USB.

Maybe someone here can be more detailed.

Solved!

I found the answer. Here's the link in case anyone else ever needs it.

Yeah! That's what I meant!

Alternatively, you could have sat them both down to discuss their problems... or let them strap on the gloves and let them go mano-a-mano.

(This post brought to you by someone who is sick and really bored, and it's only 7:52am...)
