FreeRice

Haven't had my vocabulary pushed so hard in a LONG time - perhaps since reading The Alexandria Quartet.

What a great concept.

Fun. I donated 270 grains of rice and got a rating of 49 before I blew it on 'ascetic' ... which is embarrassing because I should've known it meant vinegar-like (vinegar contains ascetic acid).

I'll try some more later.

Cheers

I'm exhausted 1550 grains later.
Got to 48 once then slipped hovering around 46 - surprising how some come unbidden, some for root - others elimination.

Could tell I was getting mentally tired when a couple were just dumb errors.
Funny some words evoke a memory.

49

Must have been some tough words to nail. I held 48 for like 2 words. Got back to 47 for a bit tho not long.

This will be my fav time waster. I use love the Reader Digest version but it was too easy. This interactive to match vocab AND in two good causes...they that's terrific.

Sure that isn't Acetic Acid. Can't really recall an ascetic acid but that was a long time ago.

I got to 2000 as well, which does not seem a great deal. Still, this is an interesting site to come and spend some time when you want to flex your "mental muscles" and do some good for someone else.

The neat thing to is SOME words do repeat on second and third sessions so it can reinforce a vocabulary upgrade.
There were a couple I blew the first time and then got on the repeat. A few I was completely at sea on and a number I blew where I second guessed myself.

Overall well done and the "incentive" keeps on going both in a good cause and keeping the challenge level up. Most fun.

Bryanc I DO find it amusing that you are spelling challenged but clearly have gift for vocabulary. Interesting mix...it IS acetic btw.
Your profession is forcing you to be an ascète which is perhaps where the confusion lay ;)

Some words are pretty archaic, like "reproof". Who uses "reproof" anymore. Only reason I knew that one is from having read Jane Austin.

Sorry but I must offer you a severe reproof for your opinion of archaic words...;)

It's what makes English vibrant. :D

600 grains of rice and 26 so far! :D I'm so... I'm so... um... what's the opposite of dumb?

My coffee is too saccharine.
