That would be very annoying, And seems to be the new way with Apple these days.
Maybe there might be some answers here:
Macbook Air M1 with OSX 12.3.1 will NOT read SD cards from USB reader
Did I read somewhere that some USB-C Cables and adapters are not rated for Data transmission and are meant for charging only. God only knows how you tell the difference between them...
I must say, My old 2011 27 inch iMac is looking better to me day by day, especially with its built-in SDCard reader and very few If any extra adapters needed.
