I have a lot of fully-functioning applications. They're from various non-purchased sources but have never given me a problem.

However, I'm concerned if I move to Monterey, the new 'security' or Gatekeeper functions will block these. At least in High Sierra, it gives me a choice to open apps from unidentified developers in System Prefs.

I certainly can afford to go out & buy all this software. Will I run into problems with my old installed software? TOA!

Tons of issues...
Either stick with what you have or move to mojave AFTER a fully cloned backup of your current system.
You are changing to APFS as well even with Mojave ....if High Sierra is working ...just leave it as is.

Next step go to Mojave - once Mojave is stable then do a full bootable back up and then try a later OS ....I'm quite happy on Mojave.
