Mini-DVI connection

2585 Views 12 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Lawrence
I've been trying to understand what a mini-DVI (as on the 12" powerbook) connection is good for. Why not just make it a regular DVI connection? Is there anything that plugs directly into a mini-DVI or even a DVI port? Seems like a ploy to sell $150 dvi-adc connectors, but i'm probably missing something.

It's there to save space, even though there is enough space to go around - same with the stupid mini-VGA port on the iBooks. Lame.
the stupid mini-VGA port on the iBooks
Speaking of stupid mini-vga ports...
Where can I find a mini-vga to full sized vga adapter for my
Lombard Powerbook, I'd love to hook up an external
monitor to my Lombard...But...
I have no idea where to get the cable.

The Apple Store sells the cable convereter as a separate product for $20 or something like that.

And for some weird enough reason, Apple decided that with the iBooks, if you wanted to hook up a DVI-based LCD screen, you'd need 2 converters - mini-VGA to VGA, and then VGA to DVI - how that is productive or efficient is beyond me.

I've seen a version of the cable at the Apple store,
But it doesn't mention that it will work with a Lombard...
It just mentions a G4 powerbook or iBook.
I'm not sure about whether it is the right one,
I guess I'll just have to call them.

Maybe I'm not understanding what you are trying to do but Lombards have a standard VGA port on them to drive an external monitor.

Sorry...I'm trying to get it to hook up to a Mac monitor,
I have an adapter for VGA to Mac on my Beige...I just don't
have a Mac to VGA adapter for my Lombard.

I forgot to mention the type of monitor I was trying to
hookup, I suppose I could just swap the monitors.

If you did need one of those adapter, they are only about $10 - $15.

Where abouts are they and what are they called?

I just tried swapping monitors and the vga monitor works
alright with my laptop...But the Mac monitor won't work
with my Beige with the ATI 128 Rage video card & vga port.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I want to set up the
laptop as a second work station with the Mac monitor.
I'd rather just use the Mac monitor that I have rather than
buy another vga monitor for the laptop. (I want to keep the
vga monitor that I have attached to the Beige)

So a little adapter would be great...If I knew where to get
one. (I've already got an adaptor to do the reverse of what I
need, So finding one that does the opposite of that can't be
too hard to find...Right?)

This changes the request slightly though...What I need to
find is an adapter that can take a Mac cable (Male) from a
Mac monitor and convert it so that I can connect the Mac
monitor to the (female) VGA connection port on my
Lombard.

We stock them. If you need one, let me know. You should be able to grab one at any Mac dealer. What size is your Mac monitor? Strange why it wouldn't work on your Beige.

It'll work with the onboard video...
But not with the ATI vga only video card.
The monitor that I want to use with the laptop is an old
1705 17" Mac monitor.

Whereas the monitor that I'm using with the Beige is a KDS
VisualSensation 17" vga monitor in the ATI 128 video card.

Gotcha! I was thinking you were trying to use a really old monitor and that was why it wasn't working.
Finally found it...All I needed was the correct words for Google.

"PC VGA Video Card to Macintosh Monitor Adapter"

Cheers!
