Can someone provide a basic rundown of all the various pieces of equipment & software that would be needed for me to get a competent newbie-level MIDI studio going?

GarageBand has been a huge amount of fun so far; it's reignited an interest I wanted to pursue a number of years ago - which is putting together a little home MIDI studio...

I've been up and down the Internet trying to find the
information I need for setting up a multimedia studio as well.

I found this site http://kellysmusic.ca/trueindex.asp and they
had the keyboard I wanted on sale for $399. cad, However the
sale appears to be over and it is now listed at $479. cad.

I bought Arturia Storm recently and when I get it, I'll be joining
their online music group to obtain more information about
setting up my own multimedia studio.

I can't afford the really nice studio software at the moment,
But I fiqured that buying a really good keyboard was more
important than buying the best software.

Later on after I've learned a bit more, I'll try to buy the really
expensive software.

Here's one of the best sites to start:
Harmony Central
Lots of links, areas to explore-perhaps start with the Midi Section...

These days a decent controller, a sequencing/digital audio program(Logic, Cubase, Performer), and some software synths (Reason, etc.) will give get you what a rack of equipment did a few years ago, though not for the price of Garage Band. ;) It can be an expensive hobby, esp. when you get into audio cards, mixers, studio monitor speakers, etc. Some used equipment even appreciates in value, unlike most computers...

OK I have a Newbie question, and since this is a MIDI for dummies thread I thought I would post it here.

I have a Roland D10 Keyboard and I want to know if I can hook it up to my G5 so I can use it with something like GarageBand. I'm guessing I am in need of a MIDI to USB box or something.

Any ideas on a decent cheap connector? I'm just using this to play around so I don't need something pricey.

Thanks

If your Roland D10 keyboard has Midi in/out ports,
Then you can use this cable UM-1X cable

Kelly's has this cable in the Old Style

You could also do what I did and to buy 2 midi cables with the UM-1SX
This will give you a longer connection from the computer to the keyboard.

Did some serious thinking, and decided to start small, simple... and inexpensive. I ordered the M-Audio Keystation 49e from Apple last evening. According to my order status, it should ship this Friday.

Smart move,
If I could use Garageband on my legacy Mac's,
Then I too would have gone the budget route.

So far I've spent almost half of the price of a new eMac.
- PCR-A30 keyboard
- Arturia Storm software
- Two 6' midi cables
- 1 usb to 2x female midi in/out cable

There's a short but tantalizing article about GarageBand and the Keystation 49e on MacFixit right now. Check out the article before it gets archived.

My keyboard order is still "open" on my order tracking page, but the estimated shipping date is still this Friday - I hope it doesn't get pushed back. I like my stupid loop-based tracks so far & have put some up on MacIdol. When that keyboard comes in, my horizons will broaden and I'll be happy as a pig in...

This is one learning-curve I'm looking forward to.

I found another Midi interface while surfing for something else,
Funny how I can find things right after I don't need them
anymore, This setup is pretty inexpensive too.

AudioTrak USB MIDI MATE Cable

Oh well, I'll pass it on to you guys anyways.
Perhaps someone else will get a deal from this information.

When I ordered my Keystation earlier in the week, the estimated shipping date was "on or before 13/02/04". Earlier in the evening I noticed the date had been changed to 30/03/04. Then an hour ago it was back to the 13th (today). Now it's back to March 30. Huh?
