I buy my RAM at Canada Computers. Found this based on your specs:

Another thing you may want to upgrade is the hard drive. Adding an SSD drive will give you an extremely noticeable improvement when it comes to snappiness of the OS, boot times, apps opening, etc. You can buy a 1TB SSD for not all that much money

Using an app called MacTracker, which keeps specs and details of every Mac made, it says it can take 16 gigs of RAM, so you should be good with that.

Thanks... wonderings and polywog.. Plan to upgrade it to 16 GB and will likely put SSD hard drive in as well.
One issue it has that I am not sure how to fix is the connection to the screen seems to have a loose connection. Sometimes the screen image is there no problem and other times it goes black. I have it hooked up to monitor and mirror the image so can work with it but if fixable it would be nice to have a laptop that is fully usable when on the move.. Any thoughts?

If you're comfortable working with electronics and small parts, the guides at iFixit are invaluable.

Here's the page for your Early 2011 MacBook Pro

Depending on what applications are usually used with that Mac, and if you're short on money, adding 16 GB memory along with an SSD may be a bit of an overkill, and 8GB would probably be more than enough.

Did you have the video card problem fixed when Apple was doing it for free? Apparently it is no longer available:
