I'm currently streaming Spotify from my MBP to a DAC connected to my integrated stereo amp. The problem is the cable from my MBP to DAC is 1.5 feet which means I cannot listen to music and work on my MBP simultaneously.

My solution is to buy an old, circa 2013 Macbook Air or older Windows laptop solely to stream Spotify from into my amp. Either way, I don't want to pay over $300 since it's only purpose is this.

Should I just buy something new and is it foolish to buy such an old MBAir (Spotify requires OSX 10.9 or above? Would buying a 2013 mean the performance will wane in any way (I don't see how since it's just Spotify, but I have to ask the question), or the OSX not be upgradeable to keep with Spotify requirements over the next years?

Or is there another device altogether that has a USB and Wifi to stream Spotify from through my DAC to amp?

Chromecast audio will do the job very nicely, for under $50. Then you can fire up whatever Spotify client you have, and tell it to play on the chromecast.

EDIT: If you prefer things non-Googley, Spotify has a page showcasing all Spotify Connect devices:

He did say he does need a device with a USB port. Do any of the things above have such a port?

Some, likely. It's not a very short list. Though I'm assuming he specified USB to connect to his external DAC; at which point Airport Express isn't going to fit the bill.

IIRC Chromecast doesn't stream Audio via USB. However it does have optical out up to 96khz/24bit which may or may not connect to the DAC (but may very well go directly to the receiver.) Apparently, the internal DAC is fairly decent as well.

Have a look at this gizmo, Allo's USBRIDGE. It features a USB output, will stream up to 32bit/384Khz, D5D256 hi res audio files, is Airplay, Roon ready and offers a few more great features - https://allo.com/sparky/usbridge.html

I am just dipping my toes in these single board computers, add on boards and operating systems to fool around with Roon.

You can also buy the parts and assemble one yourself or fully assembled kits. This CDN site should have all the items - https://www.buyapi.ca.

Hope this helps.
