Next week when I have some much needed time off, I'm heading of to The Apple Store at the Walden Gallaria. I'm driving from Kitchener, Ontario. Anyone able to give me some clear driving instructions from someone who is directionally challenged?

Their web site says: From the east and Canada: Take 90 to exit 52 West/ Walden Avenue West. Turn right on to Galleria Drive. But their map on their site seems a little confusing to me.

If I take QEW to Buffalo, where is Hwy 90 once I get into Buffalo?

Thanks for your help. I'll be sure to report from the store. ;)

wow... I never knew. I might make a similar trip soon. I was last (and only) there during the 94 University games. Buffalo is funny... so close, yet so different. And I hate the Bills.

Would love to see that store.

Getting to the Galeria is easier than I thought. (I did the pilgremage back in July with some friends).

Once you get into Buffalo just stay on the highway, its clearly marked. You'll basically end up going around the backside of Buffalo for a while (watch for all the Lawyers for Hire billboards. Count them for fun

The Galleria will be on your right so just take the first exit. You'll end up going under the highway to get to the parking lot. The diagram is confusing so don't reply on it, use your eyes instead. I might be interested in tagging along (I'm in St. George just south of Cambridge. I could meet you halfway!)

Good luck and have fun!

P.S. The store is smaller than you think but very clean and products are well displayed.

Should I be going to the Buffalo one? Is there one closer? Can anyone point me to a good online map or something on how to get to Buffalo? (Told you I was directionally challenged)

Any tips for going over the border?

The instructions are actually pretty clear if you've ever spent much time in a US city. The best advice I can give you is use your Rand-McNally.

Exit 52 will be clearly marked on signs, and you will find that you can prepare for an exit by just watching exit signs; they will count down or up as you approach it (eg exit 49, then 50, etc). Exit numbers are also marked clearly on your Rand McNally city map.

Most exits are left side, but right side exits are not unheard of. Again, this should be clear from highway signs, so assume left exit without any indication to the contrary.

If you do miss an exit, things can get a little crazy. Generally, wait till you see one with a highway overpass (don't panic, it's only gas and time), and you should be able to take that and turn around. Stay on your highway number if it splits (ie stay on I-90). Make sure the exit number doesn't change when travelling from the other direction to get back to your destination. Don't assume the Interstate is identical on both sides of the highway (ie eastbound 1-90 may not be westbound 1-90 on the other side when you turn around, but whatever it is will be clearly marked on the map.

It wouldn't hurt to get the map directions from Apple for westbound in case you have to turn around after missing an exit.

Mark your path with a highlighter on the Rand McNally or even better, on a city map you can buy at a service station sometime before Buffalo proper.

A competant co-pilot is extremely handy; by calling out exit numbers as you get close you can prepare your exit without having to actually watch anything but the road ahead and traffic around.

You probably can't miss I-90; it may well be the only highway you travel on after QEW. You can tell it's an Interstate because of the shape of the marker on your map (a 3-hump shield). Don't panic if I-90 (as indicated on your map) turns into or is called I-190 or some similar 3-digit Interstate.

1 or 2 digit Interstates:
Even last number Interstates: (eg I-94) East-West x-country
Odd last number Interstates: (eg I-35) North-South x-country

3 digit Interstates:
Even first number (eg I-494): Connects to another Interstate at each end. Usually goes around a city (more or less).
Odd first number (eg I-394) Connects to another Interstate at one end. Usually goes downtown.

Exit numbers: usually identified by a and b for East and West; ie 52a. Check your map to see which corresponds to your route, and take that.

From the look of your map, you will take I-190 East off the QEW. It should also claim to be an exit for I-90, even though technically you won't be on I-90 just yet.

If there's no East (from the look of the map, it might be called South) then take the one that claims to go to I-90; because the end of I-190 you don't want goes back to Canada, while the one you do want will meet I-90.

It also appears you will have to take pay attention when I-190 actually meets I-90. You want to go on I-90 East, so take the appropriate Exit or remain on the same road, depending on what the signs tell you to do.

From I-190 to I-90

From I-90 to AppleStore

Do yourselves an HUGE favour and pick up some chicken wings in Buffalo.

almost any pub or bar will do. they are better than almost any wings up here.

note: Anchor Bar wings rate a B- as far as locals view wings but they are still better than what we have up here

can you pick me up a case of Rolling Rock beer? :D

you'll love the apple store. outside, there are gigantic glowing apple logos on a dark slate background. when you go inside, it's so much different from the rest of the mall, it's like being bathed in a glowing, healing light. that's where i played around with the 12in powerbook, right when it came out. get a business card from one of the staff.. the corners are rounded!

the genius bar is in the back right corner, past the children's section (bean bag seats and classic snow imacs) next to the big screen projector where they hold their seminars. try to stump the genius, and he'll pick up the red "batphone" and call someone in cupertino. cheesy, but stil fun.

apple store | buffalo is pretty cool. even though i don't need anything in there, i pick up something so that i walk away with an apple bag!

ehMax, in you stay on 90 (the New York State Thruway), go east to Albany and turn right. That will take you down to New York City. You could then stay at the ehMacLand consulate and visit the Apple store in SoHo (south of Houston Street). Let us know if you are coming, and Peter and I will have some complimentary tickets to our Broadway hit show waiting for you, complete with his limo (so that you can cruise and go "warchalking"). :D

for crossing the border to the u.s.
- bring passport even if you are a canadian citizen and even if you are born in Canada. i was born in canada and i now travel to the u.s. with my passport
- always turn down your radio at the border
- i find that when we have our passports in our hands at the ready the border person does indeed take notice
- keep answers short and to the point
- keep cordial and business like

upon crossing back into canada
- be aware of what you can and cannot bring back, especially if you are not staying overnight
- be aware of 'trip questions' by canadian customs officers - "How was the Apple store?" "Is that the one on Genessee street?" etc.

You are a brave soul going from Kitchener to Buffalo! When I lived in Kitchener I use to take the back roads, 8 south to Peters Corner and then 22 south and 222 south to Carluke and Binbrook and then it was a matter of getting to the Queen E. I think I took 20.

Most people will tell you to go 401 east to 6 south and then either go thru Hamilton (which is a headache) or take 403 east to the Queen Elizabeth and across the Burlington Skyway and you are on your way.

Make sure you have a passport or picture ID (driver's license).

Don't be so cheap, Buy a map.

passports are best, but not necessary. your driver's licence, birth certificate, and possibly your health card will do. just be prepared for anything, like providing change to pay the toll booths on the way back home.

Mayors shriek? Maybe time to buy some larger jockey shorts? :D

Just be aware upon crossing the border into the U.S. that the agents have the powers of gods Not a time to try out any Youngman routines. Especially with Canada's recent stance on Iraq. You just don't want to give them ANY excuse for anything.

Unless you are a landed immigrant ehMax..... if so, and you want to go after March 17th, you'll need a visa from the American consulate in Toronto. Will take about 8 weeks....... unless you have a British, Australian or New Zealand passport in which case you don't need a visa.

Crossing into the US by road has become a lot more variable as has crossing back. It can take as little as 2 minutes or as much as 4 hours depending on the phase of the moon. Travelling by air is somewhat easier unless you are from a Middle Eastern country when the advice from Ottawa is "don't go".

It's worth a trip to an Apple Store, especially with the exchange rate getting better (and not being reflected by Apple Canada) but don't expect too much. You *may* get to see a display model of a pre-production 17" powerbook though.....

just finished watching The National and lots of lineups at U.S. border for March break.

advice was for all Canadian citizens to get a passport.

be warned that passport offices are now very busy and new rules in effect regarding quality and types of photos used.

I just have a question. What's so special about the Apple Store that it warrants a long drive? Can't you find a good Apple vendor in Toronto?

I would love to go to the Buffalo Apple Store myself but I need to justify going there for more than browsing...I'm always browsing around Apple vendors in T.O. so if I go to the Apple Store the experience has to be significantly different to justify the drive!!

ehMax, why are you going, if you don't mind my asking?
