That would depend on how much ram you have as well.I would think OS 8.6 would be your best choice for speed. It will run OS 9 but very slow.If I remember right you can swap the motherboard in the 5300 for a 5400 motherboard(which vfxweb.com for sale has complete with ram and modem for $12).Check out Low End Mac: How Much Mac Do You Need? for a lot more info on these older machines.

I have ALOT of simms lying around at the flea market table, i could get them and bump my computer to at least 32mb.

I accidently erased my hard drive so i had to back with 7.5.5, since my floppy drive is broken in my computer, i devised an elaborate way to copy files directly to the hard drive of the mac with gemulator explorer, basilisk II and a few other programs.
I remember having a Performa 6320 with 64mb ram that I tried running OS9 on. It was almost completly useless. It ran very good with OS 8.6 and with the right Carbon lib update it was able to run most classic app's. If you go much older than OS 8.6 there are too many app's that just wont work. But even today there just aren't that many app's that will run on such an old machine. If you are salvaging this computer just as a hobby it could be fun, but if you are trying to get a feel for the Mac OS I hope you realize that much has changed with the introduction of OS X.
Heres a pixture!

Specs!
OS : Mac OS 7.5.5
PowerPC 603e @ 100mhz
Ram: 20mb
S-Video in
Composite in
RCA Audio in
Cable In
Custom heatsink modification(solid heatsink compound, a small heatsink on the heatspreader)
I can watch TV on it which is fun, It has 8mb more RAM than a standard 5300CD.

Question 1: the right speaker only makes computer sounds, the other makes no noise unless theres an outside source (cable, video).

Yes, that seat cushion is horribly maimed, and yes, thats an IBM logo. :D

I had to remove the Alkaline 4.5v and replace it with a 3v lithium because it was on the verge of leaking.

Works pretty good.
Does anybody in edmonton have a spare ethernet card for this mac?
or some spare 32mb SIMMs?
